ST. GEORGE, Utah – After getting off on the right track with a win in their first of four road games over the next couple of weeks, the Regis University men's basketball team (10-7, 5-6 RMAC) fell 73-53 to the conference-leading Dixie State University Trailblazers (14-3, 9-2 RMAC) on the road Saturday night.
How It Happened: Regis found themselves in a situation they are not commonly used to, trailing 41-28 at the end if the first half. The home-sided Trailblazers could not be stopped offensively in the opening half, shooting at a 51.7 clip from the field. The Rangers surrendered 20 points in the paint, nearly half of DSU's points.
The second half did not treat RU much better as the deficit reached as many as 21 points, 70-49, with 4:18 remaining in the game. DSU was already shooting well, but when their defense clamped down, that is when the game started slipping away from Regis. The Rangers could not get much to fall in the second half, shooting only 30.8 percent in the final 20 minutes, due in large part to the stingy Trailblazer defense.
Game Notes: Just as he did last night, sophomore
Toni Rocak (8-11 FT) led all RU players with 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Senior
Christian Little (4-8 FG) and junior
Brian Dawson (4-8 FG) each scored 10 points. As a team, Regis finished with a 32.7 shooting percentage, only making 4-of-25 shots from beyond the arc. DSU assisted on 19 of their 26 made field goals, which always makes it difficult on the defense when the ball is constantly in motion.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's basketball team will finish out their four-game road trip with games at Fort Lewis College on Friday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a game against Adams State University on Saturday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m.
