Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

RU upsets conference-leading DSU 73-61

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (15-11, 10-10 RMAC) took down the conference-leading Dixie State University Trailblazers (21-5, 16-4 RMAC) 73-61 on Friday night in the Regis Field House.

How It Happened: The first half opened up as a contest that was going to go the distance with both teams going back and forth looking to gain an edge on the other team. Neither team shot particularly well, but it was Regis who held an advantage in shooting percentage 41.4 percent to 35.7 percent for Dixie State. The Rangers knocked down six three-pointers in the first half. Senior Christian Little dropped in 11 points while he and four other RU players splashed home at least one three-pointer with junior Donald Gipson making two of his five attempts.

Regis held a 32-26 advantage at the halftime break, and the beginning of second half saw the Rangers extend the lead to 13-points, 49-36, which was the largest of the game for the home team up to that point. The Trailblazers cut the lead to eight points at the 3:33 mark, Little made a perfect pass to Gipson who splashed home a three-pointer to put RU back in front by double-digits, 63-52. Another late run from Dixie State closed the gap to six points with just less than a minute to go, with the Regis in possession of the ball.

Game Notes: Little (21 PTS, 6-15 FG, 8-10 FT, 5 REB, 5 AST, 3 STL) and Gipson (18 PTS, 6-13 FG, 5-9 3-PT, 6 REB, 3 STL) combined for 39 points. Junior Brian Dawson (2-8 3-PT, 4-4 FT, REB, 1 AST) added 14 points, including a few key free throws down the stretch. The Rangers finished with a 38.6 shooting percentage for the game while holding the conference-leading Trailblazers to 34.5 percent shooting.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's basketball team will return to the Regis University Field House tomorrow night when they take on the Westminster College Griffins at 5 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Night and a recognition of the team's three seniors will take place prior to the start of the game.
