Game Recap: Baseball |

Regis bested by Washburn in both sides of doubleheader

Rangers trail throughout in both games against the Ichabods

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Regis University baseball team entered the doubleheader portion of its four-game series with Washburn on Saturday and could not build on the momentum of Friday's victory, losing the opener, 9-7, and the closer, 6-2, at Lawrence High School.

Game 1 | How It Happened: With the Ichabods holding a 6-0 lead in the sixth, a double down the left-field line by senior infielder Xavier De Leon scored senior outfielder Wyatt Featherston from third and junior catcher Kros Bay from second to give Washburn an 8-0 lead, which proved to be enough in the doubleheader opener. Featherston and Bay reached base on a walk and an RBI single up the middle, respectively.

The scoring run ended on junior infielder Eric Hinostroza's RBI groundout, which scored sophomore outfielder Mitchell Lady from third to carry WU to a 9-0 lead. Lady was hit by a pitch to reach first base.

The Rangers' offense came to life in the seventh. Senior outfielder Ryan Tierney doubled to center to bring home redshirt sophomore outfielder McKay Banks from third for a 9-1 deficit. Banks doubled to right earlier in the inning. Junior infielder Brevin Owen, who singled up the left side, scored on a balk for a 9-2 score.

Tierney later scored, 9-3, on a single to shortstop from freshman infielder Austin Vaught. Vaught ended the scoring run with his unearned run on junior infielder Mitch Albin's single to second, shortening the deficit to 9-4.

Regis's late-inning surge continued in the eighth but ultimately fell short to catch the Ichabods. Banks, who singled to third to kick off the inning, scored on a passed ball to trim the deficit to 9-5. However, Vaught's double to left center later in the inning cut the deficit in half from four to two, 9-7, scoring Owen from third and junior catcher Roger Riley from second. Owen singled through the right side, and Riley was hit by a pitch to reach base.

The scoreless tie ended in the bottom of the second. Bay reached base on a fielder's choice that gave Washburn a 1-0 lead when senior infielder Mark Wanner scored from third. Wanner doubled to right to open the inning.

In the fifth with a 1-0 lead, WU junior infielder Eric Hinostroza singled up the middle to bring home both Bay from third and Lady from second for a 3-0 advantage. Bay singled to right to begin the inning, and Lady bunted a single in the following at-bat.

Wanner later grounded out to the pitcher, which allowed Hinostroza to score on the throw for a 4-0 lead. The lead went to 5-0 on junior outfielder Parker Dunn's single through the right side, which brought home sophomore infielder Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli from third. Clark-Chiapparelli doubled to right field to get on base.

A four-run sixth came after for the Ichabods. The scoring in the sixth started on Bay's aforementioned RBI single up the middle, scoring sophomore infielder Brett Ingram from second. Ingram reached base on a single to right.

Game Notes: Banks and Owen each went 2-for-3, while scoring two runs in the opening game. Banks had a double for one of his hits. Vaught went 2-for-4, scoring a run and knocking in a share of the game-high three RBI. One of Vaught's hits was a double. Tierney had a hit, which was a double, scored one run, and had an RBI. Riley was credited with a hit and a run.

Game 2 | How It Happened: Possessing a 2-0 lead in the third, Washburn added a run, 3-0, on a single by Ingram to get Hinostroza to cross home plate as an unearned run from first. Hinostroza, who scored the eventual game-winning run, walked to get on base.

RU cut into the deficit in the fourth, 3-1, when Banks hit a solo home run to left field.

WU grew its lead to 5-1 on junior infielder Carson Sader's two-run home run to center in the fourth. Wanner was on first on account of his single to center to begin the inning.

The Ichabods tacked on one more run in the fifth when a bases-loaded walk to Sader forced Dunn home from third for Washburn's 6-1 lead. Dunn walked and later stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch.

The Rangers would bring the game to its final score in the seventh on Tierney's double down the left-field line, bringing Owen home from first. Owen opened the inning with a single to shortstop.

WU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Ingram's two-run home run to center field. Hinostroza, who walked, was on first.

Game Notes: Banks went 1-for-2 with an RBI on account of his home run to go along with a walk and a stolen base. Owen, who went 1-for-3, scored the other run. Tierney's 1-for-3 performance in the second game included a double and an RBI. Senior catcher Kennedy Phillips contributed a double.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis falls to a 3-6 record overall. RU will conclude its four-game series with the Ichabods (8-7) at Lawrence High School on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
