Scheffel Propels Offense In Tripleheader Sweep Over Adams State

DENVER - Laura Scheffel steered the Regis softball team to a tripleheader sweep over Adams State on Saturday at the Regis Softball Complex.

The senior drove in 11 runs, scored five times, homered twice and had five hits as the Rangers scored 32 runs.

The three victories pushed the Rangers' winning streak to four games and evened their overall record at 6-6. It also gives them a 3-0 record to start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Game One | How it Happened: Scheffel's swatted two home runs, drove in six runs and scored three times as the Rangers exploded for an 11-2 run-rule victory in five innings over the Grizzlies.

Scheffel hit a towering 3-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to enact the mercy rule. She hit her first 3-run dinger in the fourth on a home run that tucked just inside the left field fair pole. The senior finished the day going 3-for-4, with six RBI and three runs.

Kynra Nelson and Jessi Case set the table at the top of the line up getting on six times and scoring five runs. Kara Rodeheaver scattered seven hits and allowed two runs in her third victory of the season in the circle for RU.

Regis opened the game scoring three runs in the first inning, with Taylor Armitage knocking in a pair after a bases loaded walk. The Rangers would push the lead to 4-0 in the third after Armitage tripled and scored on a single from Logan Taylor.

The first homer of the day for Scheffel came after Nelson and Case reached on a walk and single putting the Rangers up 7-1.

Her final at bat of the game, gave RU a walk-off victory as she became the first RU player this season to hit multiple home runs in a game.

Adams State scored single runs in the fourth and the fifth innings, but struggled to string together hits against Rodeheaver who benefitted from two double plays.

Game Notes: RU posted 13 hits in the victory… Nelson and Case each stole two bases… The Rangers benefitted from six walks… Regis chased Adams State starting pitcher

Game Two | How it Happened: A six-run bottom of the sixth inning punctuated by run-scoring doubles by Scheffel and Allen helped the Rangers earn a 10-4 victory in the second game.

Abby Covington (2-2) posted a career-high 11 strikeouts as she went the distance allowing six hits and four earned runs.

Adams State briefly held the lead after a solo home run by Baylie Fryar. Regis responded by batting around in a four-run second inning, which included two bases loaded walks and RBI singles from Carly Gray and Case.

The Grizzlies tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on an Analiese Rodriguez 3-run home run that just cleared the left field fence.

A five-run bottom of the sixth inning was the exclamation point for the Rangers who earned back the lead in the fifth on an RBI single from Taylor.

The big inning opened with three-straight Rangers reaching base, including a bunt from Case to load the bases. Scheffel prompted the relief pitcher for the Grizzlies with a lacing double off the wall to score two runs, making it a 7-4 game.

Shayelyn Allen, who scored the winning-run on Taylor's single in the fifth, followed with a line drive double scoring one and Scheffel sprinted home to score on a wild pitch. The Rangers would push the lead to 10-5 on Taylor's bloop single to shallow center.

Game Notes: Scheffel recorded three RBIs… Allen and Taylor had two hits and two RBI each… RU turned its third double play of the series… Carly Gray and Allen scored twice… Regis had 13 hits and did not commit an error.

Game Three | How it Happened: Armitage did it all in the series finale as she earned her first victory of the year and smashed her first-career grand slam.

The senior allowed only three hits, but it was her towering shot to deep left center that highlighted her big day. Scheffel also capped her monsterous day with her third-straight multi RBI game.

Gray singled home to make it a 5-0 lead and set the table for the two-hit bomb that had Armitage smiling as she rounded the bases and was greeted by a mop of teammates at the plate.

Regis pushed the lead to 11-0 in the bottom of the fourth, on the third bases loaded walk of the day and an infield single from Maggie Washer.

Cortney Sexton pitched in relief to close out the tripleheader sweep as the daylight crept away.

Game Notes: Case, Armitage and Taylor each had two hits… Scheffel's double in the first inning nearly cleared the fence for her third homer of the day… Beard scored three runs reaching base on two walks and a hit by pitch… Armitage struck out four and walked none.

Up Next For The Rangers: The finale between the Rangers and Grizzlies scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to forecasted weather conditions. Regis is scheduled to travel to Chadron State next weekend for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
