CHADRON, Neb. - Madison Flores hit a game-winning home run for the Regis softball team that split its doubleheader with Chadron State on Friday. The Rangers took game one, 4-3, but dropped the second game, 3-1.
Regis is now 7-7 on the season with a 4-1 RMAC record.
Game One | How it Happened: Flores cracked her first-collegiate home run in the fifth inning to lift Regis over the Eagles in the opening game.
Her solo shot was enough for the Rangers who had let an early lead slip away in the first RMAC conference test of the season.
For the third time in four games, the Rangers scored on a bases-loaded walk and Laura Scheffel, coming off a career weekend, drove in a run to give RU a 2-0 lead in the first. Shayelyn Allen pushed the Rangers lead to 3-0 when she smacked a run-scoring double in the third.
Chadron State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when an error by Logan Taylor at first allowed Gabby Russel to swat a 3-run homer to even the game in the bottom of the fourth.
All of the Eagles' runs were unearned against Regis starter Kara Rodeheaver (4-3) who pitched all seven innings and earned her team-leading fourth victory of the year. She scattered six hits and struck out one.
Carly Beard had one hit and scored twice, while Allen went 3-for-3 and two RBI.
Game Notes: RU's win gave them a five-game winning streak… The Rangers struck out six times… Beard threw out a runner stealing… Rodeheaver lowered her ERA to 3.40.
Game Two | How it Happened: Kynra Nelson led off the game with a triple to right center and scored later that inning on a wild pitch to put Regis up, 1-0. That would be the only run the Rangers would score.
RU rallied in the top of the seventh, but a short ball hit to right field - that in most circumstances would have been a hit - turned into a force play at second and exhausted the comeback effort.
Chadron State tied the game in the bottom of the third without recording a hit. The sacrifice fly off the bat of Bailey Rominger allowed Makayla McKeehan to score from third.
The Eagles took the lead and never looked back as a costly error by Allen allowed two runs to score with the bases loaded in the third. It was only the second error of the season for the third baseman.
Pitching duties were split up with Abby Covington making the start and taking the loss. Taylor Armitage pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Game Notes: Chadron scored its three runs on just two hits… Regis had its five hits scattered throughout the lineup.
Up Next For The Rangers: Regis heads back to the diamond to close out the four-game series with the Eagles. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
