Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 6 Regis escapes Concordia University - St. Paul, 14-12, to improve to 2-0

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Regis University women's lacrosse team traveled to sunny Melbourne, Florida for the first of their three Spring Break games to be played in the Sunshine State. On Sunday, No. 6 ranked Regis (2-0) escaped an upset-minded Concordia University – St. Paul Golden Bears (4-1) team by two goals, 14-12, for their second win of the season.

How It Happened: Senior midfielder Jessica Berg got the game started with back-to-back goals to put the Rangers in front 2-0 to start the game. The two teams then traded goals until the Golden Bears managed to tie the game with a 2-0 run after RU took an 6-4 advantage. This was countered with three-straight goals from Regis. Sophomore Alexis Parker scored two of the goals and assisted on the other to fellow sophomore Lucy Johnson to put the Rangers back in front, 9-6. At halftime, RU held an 11-7 lead

The second half did not help Regis as much as they would have liked with CSP outscoring the Rangers 5-3. Thankfully, the four-goal lead that RU had built-up in the first half helped calm the nerves towards the end of the game when tensions started to rise. At the 5:17 mark, the visiting Golden Bears scored to bring the lead down to three goals.

A couple minutes later, a free-position goal from CSP cut the lead to two, 14-12, before the Regis defense and offense were finally able to recover to cause a turnover and then keep possession to run out the clock. A Ranger turnover with 11 seconds gave possession back to the Golden Bears, but as they transitioned and got a shot off, they were called for offsides which gave possession back to RU who ran out the remaining seconds to claim the 14-12 lead.

Game Notes: Johnson led all players with four goals on the day, setting her new career-high for goals and points in a game. Senior Ali Vanek and Junior Kyleigh Peoples each finished with three goals and an assist in the game. Defensively, junior goalie Elle Crawford made nine saves in the game. Senior Jessica Berg finished the game with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers to lead all players in each category. The draw circle was the area that put Regis in danger of losing the game. They lost the draw control battle 23-5 which led to many forfeited offensive opportunities.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University women's lacrosse team will play again on Tuesday, March 3 at 5 p.m. MST when they take on the Florida Institute of Technology Panthers. Following that game, the team will head to Lakeland, Florida to play against No. 8 ranked Florida Southern College at 10 a.m. MST on Friday, March 3.
