Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 6 Rangers suffer biggest loss since 2017

LAKELAND, Fla. - The sixth-ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (2-2) suffered a 17-5 loss at the hands of the seventh-ranked Florida Southern Mocs (5-3) on Friday afternoon.

How it Happened: In what looked to be a very competitive match early on, turned into a very tough defeat for Regis. The first 16 minutes of the game featured eight goals split evenly between the two teams. However, after the fourth goal was scored by senior Ali Vanek of the Rangers, the Mocs went on a tear. Southern scored five-straight goals to end the half, taking a 9-5 lead into halftime.

The second half was another difficult 30 minutes for RU. Sophomore Lucy Johnson ended up scoring what would be Regis' only goal of the second half early on in the second frame. After that an 8-0 run from the home side put the game out of reach. The Rangers hit a brick wall and could not find any kind of rhythm as fans watched their shots sail high and wide of the net whenever they were not saved by the Mocs. Final score of the game was 17-5, a difficult loss and the second-consecutive for RU.

Game Notes: The last loss of this kind for the Rangers came in 2017 in the very final game of the season. Outside of Vanek and Johnson, senior Jessica Berg, junior Kyleigh Peoples and freshman Gabby Sabater were the other three RU players to score in the game. Vanek had the only assist in the game for Regis. Junior Elle Crawford (L, 2-2) faced a ridiculous 40 shots in the game, making nine saves as she kept the team in the game for as long as she could.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University women's lacrosse team will return home for one game next Friday against the Rockhurst University Hawks on the Regis Lacrosse Field at 3 p.m. as they begin conference play.
