DENVER - The Regis softball team defeated New Mexico Highlands in a game called after five innings due to darkness. Regis won the game 3-1 after falling to MSU Denver earlier in the day on a one-run contest, decided on a controversial call at home.Â
MSU Denver | How it Happened: The Rangers rallied from a three-run deficit, but a controversial call proved to be the difference maker for the Roadrunners, who won 4-3.
Shayelyn Allen's first collegiate home run was a no doubt and capped a 3-run inning for the Rangers that struggled offensively up until the sixth.Â
In the top of the seventh inning, it appeared Kynra Nelson had gunned down the Roadrunners' go ahead run at home plate. Umpire Brandon Johnson called the runner safe due to obstruction on behalf of Regis catcher Carly Beard.
That run proved to be the difference as the Rangers could not mount another rally.
Regis trailed for most of the game until their two-out rally in the sixth. Jessi Case walked, stole second, and scored on Beard's chopper just inside the third base bag. Nelson pounded a Darby McGhee fastball well over the left field fence.
Taylor Armitage pitched 1.2 innings in relief and was credited with the loss after allowing one run. Rodeheaver, coming off a strong weekend against Chadron State, started for Regis and pitched into the sixth inning. She allowed 10 hits and three earned runs.Â
The Roadrunners scored two runs in the third with RBIs from Laney Sheppard and Kayla Banks. They tacked on their third run with Rebecca Gonzalez driving in a run. Alyssa Richter drove in the game-winning hit with her single to right.Â
Game Notes: The Rangers were held hitless until Armitage's single in the fifth inning… RU was out hit 11-3 … Armitage gave up one hit and walked two … RU struck out eight times.
New Mexico Highlands | How it Happened: The second game of the day was saw the Rangers defeat the Cowgirls, 3-1. The game was originally suspended, however, it was later discovered that rules prevented the teams from resuming play, giving RU the win.  d
The Rangers scored all of their runs in the fourth inning as Carly Gray dumped in a run scoring bloop and Jessi Case chopped a two-run single over the third basemen.
New Mexico Highlands held a brief lead in the fourth on a solo home run from Ashlea Ortega to the deepest part of the park. Â
Abby Covington pitched five innings and allowed five hits and one run. She had only threw 54 pitches.

Game Notes: The Rangers had a four-hour break between their games… First pitch was delayed nearly two hours... Regis will play MSU Denver later in the afternoon to close of the weekend pod play.
