Box Score 2 DENVER - Laura Scheffel hit a two-run homer to lift the Regis softball team to a 5-3 victory over New Mexico Highlands. Regis committed five errors in a 13-0 loss to MSU Denver in the second game.
The Rangers finished the weekend pod series picking up two wins against New Mexico Highlands and lost both contests against MSU Denver. Overall, Regis is 10-10 and 7-4 in RMAC play.
New Mexico Highlands | How it Happened: The game was tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, when Scheffel smashed a towering walk-off homer. It was the third home run of the season for the senior and she is now tied with
Taylor Armitage for the team lead.
Kara Rodeheaver (6-3) earned the victory in relief. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run.
Taylor Armitage started for RU and surrendered two unearned runs in her 4.2 innings.
Carly Beard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give RU an early 1-0 lead. Beard also had another RBI in the 2-run fifth inning for the Rangers.
Shayelyn Allen's error opened the door for the Cowgirls in the fifth. Camrynn Ziegler snuck a single up through the middle to give NMH a 2-1 lead.
Jessi Case would reach on an error and move into scoring position for the Rangers. Beard would plate the tying run with a bloop single into shallow center. Regis would benefit from the second Cowgirls' error that allowed
Laura Scheffel to score and give RU a 3-2 lead.
The Cowgirls would even the score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Traci Fish.
Kynra Nelson started off the seventh inning reaching on a perfect bunt that died in front of home plate. Scheffel then cracked the big fly and was greeted by a mob at home plate.
Game Notes: Nelson went 2-for-4 and scored twice… Scheffel scored twice, including the run on the HBP in the third… Case added two stolen bases to her team-leading 10... RU struck out five times… NMH committed four errors.
MSU Denver | How it Happened: The Rangers committed five errors and recorded just two hits in the lopsided loss to the Roadrunners, who scored five runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth inning.
The Roadrunners jumped out to an early lead on Laney Sheppard's two-run single down the left field line in the first. MSU Denver tagged on another run on Rebecca Gonzalez's single.
Four Regis errors led to a five-run inning for the Roadrunners in the fourth. Allen misplayed two ground balls and also threw wide trying to nail a runner at home. Sheppard cashed in two more runs, Alyssa Richter singled home a run, and two runs scored on errors.
The Roadrunners plated six runs in the fifth that pushed their lead to 14, more than enough to enact the eight-run mercy rule.
Abby Covington (3-5) started in the circle for the Rangers and went 3.1 innings. She allowed six runs - three of which were earned - and seven hits. Rodeheaver pitched 1 inning and
Cortney Sexton recorded one out in relief.
The Rangers' two hits came from
Logan Taylor and
Carly Beard at the bottom of the line up. Regis' only scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when they left the bases loaded
Game Notes: The Rangers were out hit 14-2… Allen committed four errors… Sheppard had five RBIs to lead MSU Denver.
Up Next For The Rangers: Next weekend the Rangers will stay in town to take on Colorado Christian University in a four-game series at Lakewood Park. The Cougars sport the top record in the conference (20-7, 10-2 RMAC) after splitting their series last week with Fort Lewis.
