SPEARFISH, South Dakota – The Regis University volleyball team (9-4, 4-1 RMAC) held on in five sets to earn their fourth-straight win in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. Regis came away with the five set with over the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (4-10, 1-5 RMAC) on an evening when
Caitlyn Burroway reached a career milestone.
How It Happened: Burroway came into the match needing only one dig to reach an illustrious milestone for her career, 1,500 career digs. She becomes, what is believed to be, only the sixth Ranger to reach 1,500 career digs while moving into soul possession of sixth all-time in the RU record books for career digs. All of this came in a match that was like a roller coaster for Regis fans.
The Rangers won the first set comfortably with a 25-18 win, but then lost in set two 27-25. RU won set three by a score of, again, 25-18 but then could not find their offense in set four. The Yellow Jackets had their best offensive set in the fourth set which led to a 25-17 win for the home team, forcing a fifth set to decide the winner.
Momentum was high for the home team coming off a fourth set win at home, and they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Regis responded with a kill and service ace from Burroway. Much like the match had progressed all night, the teams traded points all the way to until BHSU took an 8-6 lead near the midpoint of the set. Once again, the Rangers held tough and flipped the script to take a 9-8 lead. During this run, RU scored six out of seven points which put them in front 12-9 as the race to 15 points got shorter.
Following a kill from the Yellow Jackets, junior setter
Mara LeGrand set up Burroway for a monster kill to put RU two points away from victory. An attack error from BHSU set up match point, but the Yellow Jackets scored twice in a row to bring the score to 14-12 in favor of Regis. Sophomore
Halle Theis stepped up in one of the biggest moments of the match and put her swing away to close out match point and give the Rangers their fourth-straight conference win of the season.
Game Notes: Not only did Burroway collect her 1,500
th career dig in this match, but she also broke her single game career-high for kills with 22. Her previous record was 21 which happened two times, the most recent was a 21-kill performance at Colorado School of Mines on September 16
th. This evening, Burroway hit .264 and tallied 11 digs, 10 more than she needed to reach 1,500, with two blocks and a service ace to boot. Theis set a new season-high with 14 kills, including the kill that won the match for RU as she hit .281. Sophomore
Maddy Mallory tallied seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Freshman
Taylor McCarthy added a season-best six kills. LeGrand, the reigning RMAC Setter of the Week, registered 48 assists, 13 digs, two blocks and three kills in the match. The RU offense was not operating optimally, but they finished the match with a combined .180 hitting percentage as a team which helped secure their ninth win of the season.
Up Next for the Rangers: After this grueling five-setter, the Regis University volleyball team will have a short time to recover before they take on the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in Rapid City. Tune in tomorrow to see if the team can add to their winning streak.
