Grand Junction, Colo. - The Regis University women's soccer team (7-4-0, 4-2-0) wrapped up their four-game road trip with a battle against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (7-2-0, 4-1-0), Sunday afternoon. Regis was coming off a huge 1-0 win over Westminster the previous Friday. Today though, Mesa's attackers overpowered the Rangers as Regis was dealt their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) loss of the season.
How it Happened: CMU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play when Lila Dere scored. Then, Dere scored again in the 18th minute of play to increase their lead to 2-0. RU responded by getting on the board in the 43rd minute when graduate student
Keegan Storlie banged in a shot to the lower right side of the goal off a pass from junior
Audrey Teague. The Rangers were only able to get one more shot off before the first 45 minutes came to a close.Â
In the second half, Dere completed her hat trick when she scored again in the 53rd minute, making the score 3-1, Mavericks. On their heels, Regis needed goals and fast. They had an opportunity to cut into Mesa's lead when Teague was fouled in the penalty box in the 70th minute. Teague lined up for the attempt, but her shot was saved. Nine minutes later, CMU put the game away with another goal from Dere - sealing RU's fate.
