RU Wins Ninth in a Row With 3-1 Win Over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Riding an eight-match winning streak, the Regis University volleyball team (13-4, 8-1 RMAC) made their way to Alamosa, Colorado to take on the Adams State University Grizzlies (8-10, 4-5 RMAC) on Saturday evening. Regis, having won in three sets the night prior, picked up a four-set win over the Grizzlies on their home court Saturday evening.

How it Happened: The Rangers came out of the gates blazing hot on offense. There was no way that the Grizzlies were going to stop RU in the first set. Regis had 19 kills in the first set with an unbelievable .567 hitting percentage. On the heels of such a strong attack, the Rangers took the first set comfortably 25-15. They needed only 30 attack attempts to tally the 19 kills, committing only two attack errors in the set. The team also had two service aces and two blocks to open things up.

RU cooled off a bit after their fiery start as their hitting percentage dipped to .150 in set two. The excitement of how well they played in the first set helped carry them through set two as they fought for the 25-22 second set win. At the end of set two, Burbrink led Regis with eight kills, but a number of others followed right behind her.

Junior Mara LeGrand was on her game tonight, setting up her attackers with well-placed sets. After two sets, LeGrand already had 26 assists (13.0 per set) as she and the team looked to close things out in the third set. ASU did not make it easy. Instead, the home team jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the set, pinning the Rangers into an early hole. RU could not climb out of the early deficit, and they lost set three 25-17, forcing the match into a fourth set. Regis had 12 attacking errors in the third set, resulting in a .000 hitting percentage, and they errored on four of their serves.

The Rangers found their offensive mojo, once again, in the fourth set leading to a 25-15 win to seal the victory. In true Colorado-style, RU hit .303 in the fourth set with 14 kills. It was an efficient offensive attack from Regis, and they added two more blocks and service aces in the set as well.

Game Notes: Burbrink was the pinnacle of the offense for most of the night leading to a team-high 13 kills and .474 hitting percentage. She also had two blocks at the net and one dig. Senior Rachel Siurek (.192 H%) and sophomore Halle Theis (.308 H%) each registered 11 kills. Theis had two blocks and two digs while Siurek added a block and a dig. Graduate student Caitlyn Burroway had 10 kills and 14 assists, sophomore Maddy Mallory tallied five kills, one block and a dig. LeGrand finished the match with 46 assists, seven digs, five kills and a service ace. Junior Haley Kennedy continues to serve well, acing her serve twice in the match while also providing some stellar defense with 20 digs (5.0 per set). Graduate student Sophie Griese chipped in with eight digs and a service ace. The team finished with a hitting percentage of .228 for the match.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University volleyball team will return home for their next two contests, which will feature matchups with the Chadron State College Eagles on Friday, October 22 at 5 p.m. and the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Saturday, October 23rd at 3 p.m.
