GUNNISON, Colo. - The Regis University women's soccer team (10-4-0, 7-2-0 RMAC) took a road trip to Gunnison to face the Western Colorado University Mountaineers (4-8-1, 1-6-1 RMAC) in the team's tenth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the season. Freshman
Madison Cullinan's 43rd minute goal, and the team's relentless defense, led the Rangers past the Mountaineers 1-0 after 90 minutes.
How it Happened: It was a scoreless affair until Cullinan connected with freshman
Alex Baer in the 43rd minute. Baer sent a cross into the box where Cullinan was waiting. Cullinan beat her opponents to a good position in the box and got her head on the ball which found the top left corner of the goal giving Regis a 1-0 advantage right before halftime.
After the break, the Rangers started quick, seeing early shots from graduate student
Keegan Storlie and junior
Kelby Kuo, but neither found the back of the net. After RU overpowered the home team in the first half, taking 13 shots while holding the Mountaineers to only two, the home team started to fight back. Despite the effort to climb back into the match, Regis' defense was far too strong as they held WCU scoreless for the entire 90 minutes to claim the clean sheet shutout.
Game Notes: Cullinan's goal was the first of her career as a Ranger. The final shot tally for the match heavily favored RU who enjoyed a 16 - 7 advantage. Kuo led the team with five shots on the day (two on-target) and juniors
Madison Hand and
Audrey Teague chipped in with two shots. Though she only saw one opportunity to make a save, senior goalkeeper
Katelyn Martin made the save as she picked up her second shutout of the season.
Up Next for the Rangers: The team will play their final road game of the regular-season this Sunday when they travel to Durango, Colorado to take on the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (3-6-2, 1-4-2 RMAC) at noon.
