DURANGO, Colo. - The Regis University women's soccer team (11-4-0, 8-2-0 RMAC) headed southwest to battle the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (3-7-2, 1-5-2 RMAC), Sunday afternoon. The team was coming off a strong 1-0 victory over Western Colorado the previous Friday where the team clinched a spot in the annual Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament. The Rangers are currently third in the conference while the Skyhawks are tenth.
Today, Regis got it done thanks to their complimentary soccer play as well as a thrilling last minute goal.
How it Happened: RU set the tone by sending off four unanswered shots in the first 13 minutes of play, three of which were sent by junior
Audrey Teague. However, the Skyhawks caught a break when a foul was called in Regis' penalty box - giving them a chance to strike first. They sank their penalty kick and took a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the game.
The Rangers didn't back down though. Just three minutes later, junior
Ella Palmer attempted to cross the ball to a teammate in FLC's box, but Skyhawk defender Katie Smith accidently deflected the ball into her own team's net for an own goal.
The score remained at 1-1 until just after half, the Skyhawks scored in the 47th minute to regain the lead over the Rangers. But Teague would cash in on her previous shot attempts with one of the team's prettiest goals of the season. Freshman
Sarah Wynn received a deep ball and put it perfectly in the box where only Teague could kick it into the goal.
Now with the game tied at two and time running out, both teams were battling to score. In the 86th minute, RU capitalized on their offensive pressure and got in front of the FLC defenders. Teague kept her hot foot going and scored a beautiful goal from well outside of the 18 to lift Regis above Fort Lewis.
Game Notes: The Rangers outshot FLC by a margin of 11 (4) - 7 (3). It was a somewhat chippy match as five cautions were issued throughout the full 90. Teague's five shots and two goals were each just one short of her career-highs. Wynn and junior
Kelby Kuo also had two shots each.
Up Next for the Rangers: The team will return home this Thursday for their second to last regular-season game of the year as UCCS comes to town. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
