DENVER - It was a cold yet sunny day on the Regis Match Pitch for a battle between the Regis University Rangers (11-5-0, 8-3-0 RMAC) and the No. 15 UC - Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (13-3-0, 8-2-0 RMAC), Thursday afternoon. The game was about as dramatic as it gets - Regis came back from a two-goal deficit in the second half and forced overtime. However, in extra time, the Mountain Lions capitalized on a loose ball in the Ranger's box to win the game in golden goal fashion.
How it Happened: UCCS scored in the 14th minute to open up the scoring. Junior
Kelby Kuo responded with a nice shot just a minute later in an attempt to level the score, but her shot was wide right. Then in the 27th minute, the Mountain Lions added another goal and increased their lead to 2-0.
During the break, the Rangers regrouped and started the second half swinging. Graduate student
Keegan Storlie sent off a nice shot in the 55th minute, but it was off-target. Then in the 68th minute, Kuo scored a beautiful goal off an assist from freshman
Sarah Wynn to cut into UCCS' lead. Later in the 80th minute, Regis scored the equalizer. This time, senior
Gia Lemley scored off an assist from Wynn to level the game at 2-2. Both team's defenses held strong and time expired, forcing OT.
In extra time, Kuo had a great chance to end the game by sending a low shot, but Mountain Lion keeper Alexis Walker was quick and saved it. Then on the other side of the pitch, a loose ball in Regis' box was slammed into RU's net by Kaitlin Hinkle of UCCS, which ended the game and gave the Mountain Lions the win.
Game Notes: RU was outshot by UCCS 19 (11) - 10 (3) through the 94 minutes played. Kuo tied for a game-high in shots with six (two on-goal) and scored her 11th goal of the season (second in the RMAC). Lemley sent off two shots (one on-goal) and scored her first goal of the season! Wynn had a career-high two assists. Senior keeper
