DENVER - The Regis University women's soccer team (12-5-0, 9-3-0 RMAC) played an incredibly exciting match Wednesday afternoon versus cross-town rival No. 20 Colorado School of Mines (12-3-3, 9-2-1 RMAC) to close out the regular-season. On the line was a potential hosting privilege for the Rangers in the upcoming 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
How it Happened: It was a defensive stalemate for a majority of the match as both team's defenses were controlling the opposing team's attacking zones efficiently. Despite the heavy defensive pressure, Regis had two shots on-target in the 15th minute of play. The first came from senior
Gia Lemley and the next was sent off by junior
Audrey Teague, but both were saved by CSM keeper Sierra Roth.
RU recorded two more shots while Mines rattled off seven, but none found the back of the net and the score remained at 0-0 heading into the half.
Just after the break in the 53rd minute, Lemley had another chance to put Regis ahead with a nice shot on-goal, but Roth remained stout and saved the shot. As time was running out, each team saw more opportunities to gain the lead. Freshman
Sarah Wynn had a chance on-goal in the 82nd as well as freshman
Stella Straubing in the 83rd, but both attempts were saved.
With the score still at 0-0, the teams headed to overtime to settle the dust. Just a few moments into OT, a yellow card was issued to CSM for a late tackle in Regis' attacking zone. Wynn lined up to take the set piece and lofted it into Mines' box. Lemley was in the perfect position to tap it into the goal, ending the game and sealing the win for RU.
Game Notes: Lemley's goal was her second of the season. She's now scored in back-to-back games for the Rangers. Wynn is turning out to be an assist machine as she's recorded four in the past three games for Regis. Junior
Kelby Kuo also had two shots in today's match. Senior keeper
Katelyn Martin recorded her third shutout of the season and racked up five saves in the contest.
Up Next for the Rangers: The team will wait to see how the rest of the regular-season RMAC matches shake out to see who and where they'll play in the RMAC Tournament. Stay tuned to www.RegisRangers.com for updates!
