DENVER - The Regis University women's soccer team (6-3-0, 3-1-0) took on the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (2-5-0, 1-3-0) Sunday afternoon in the Ranger's third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) game of the season.
The team was coming off a heartbreaking 1-2 loss to MSU Denver this past Thursday, so the squad was looking to rebound and stay in the top five of the RMAC standings.
How it Happened: After six shots were rattled off by the Rangers, junior
Madison Hand got things going for the Rangers when the midfielder scored a beautiful unassisted goal in the 29th minute of play.
RU's defensive core allowed just three BHSU shots in the first half, none of which were on-goal. After Hand's goal, the Ranger's had two corner attempts, but the score would remain at 1-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, Hand found the back of the net yet again in the 73rd minute after a great pass from freshman
Stella Straubing to make the score 2-0, Regis. However, just a few moments later in the 75th minute, BHSU cut into RU's lead when Haylie Scruggs scored, making the score 2-1, Rangers.
But Regis' defense, who's been impressive all season, stood tall for the final 10 minutes of play by only allowing one shot which did not get past senior keeper
Katelyn Martin. The final score would remain 2-1, Rangers. The team improved to 3-1 in RMAC play.
Game Notes: Junior
Kelby Kuo had a career-high seven shots (three on-goal). Hand also reached a career-high in both shots with five (two on-goal) as well as goals with two. Senior
Gia Lemley and junior
Audrey Teague each registered two shots.
Regis outshot the Yellow Jackets 19 (9) - 6 (1). One caution was issued to each team during the match. Martin had no saves while BHSU needed seven.
Up Next for the Rangers: RU's road trip continues this Friday when the team plays the Westminster Griffins (4-1-2, 1-1-1) at 5:30 p.m..
