DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team (9-7-1, 5-5 RMAC) powered their way into clinching a spot the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament with a 4-1 win over the Adams State University Grizzlies (2-15, 1-9 RMAC) on Senior Day.
How It Happened: It did not take long for the Rangers to get things started on Sunday. Knowing that they needed to secure a win to clinch a spot in the tournament, RU got on the board in the 6
th minute. After junior
Vilhjalmur Kaldal worked his way down the far side of the field, he took a shot that was saved by the Grizzlies goalkeeper, but it ricocheted to senior
Jake Brown who collected the rebound and put away his shot into the open net. Brown's goal got things started on a day where goals would be aplenty. Less than three minutes after the goal, Regis was given a penalty kick opportunity after Kaldal was tripped inside the 18-yard box. Kaldal stepped up and drilled his PK opportunity for his 10
th goal of the season. The Rangers would hold on to the 2-0 lead as the game moved into halftime.
With a two-goal lead in hand, RU extended their lead to three in the 66
th-minute on one of the best shots of the season from graduate student
Jean Carre. As junior
Lucas Durval set up for a free-kick about 10 yards from midfield, he sent in a cross towards the top of the box where Carre flicked his foot, catching the ball just enough to chip the ball over the goalkeeper's head and into the net. Just a few minutes later as Regis was moving their offense up the field, the Rangers drew another penalty kick chance after a handball was called in the scoring area. Durval stepped up for the shot and he converted to give RU a commanding 4-0 lead.
In the final minute of the game, ASU broke through with a goal after a long pass got past the Rangers' backline, ruining the clean sheet and the shutout for Regis. Despite the last-minute goal from the visitors, the home team prevailed with the dominant 4-1 win.
Game Notes: Brown found the net for the first time of the season, Kaldal scored his team-leading 10
th goal of the season. Carre claimed his third goal of the year and Durval's score was his fourth of the season. Kaldal and Durval picked up the only two assists for RU. Graduate student
Tim Dolan did not see much action in between the posts as his defense held the Grizzlies to only four total shots on the day. Dolan made one save in the match.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Men's Soccer Tournament is set to begin this Thursday, November 4
th. As the table sits, Regis will secure the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will match up with the No. 3 seeded Westminster College Griffins. Once all the contests are settled from today, the RMAC will announce the final RMAC Tournament seeds.
