DENVER - The No. 24 Regis University Rangers (19-5, 14-2 RMAC) played for the second-straight day as they took on the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls (9-17, 5-11 RMAC) at the Regis Field House, Saturday afternoon. The team was coming off a big 3-1 victory over Adams State the night prior.
It was a special occasion for the Rangers as they acknowledged the vast accomplishments of their seniors. Today, it took just three sets to take care of the Cowgirls as they celebrated Senior Day in style.
How it Happened: The opening set was RU's best of the day as they owned a .406 hitting percentage. The Rangers took a quick 5-0 lead to set the tone and didn't slow down. NMHU threatened by coming within three midway through the set, but Regis kept their cool and ended the set by going on a 6-1 run to take the 1-0 lead.
The Rangers never trailed in the second set and took it right to NMHU by forcing an attacking error to open up the scoring. Regis had their second-best hitting percentage of the day (.36) and had 11 kills from the likes of graduate student
Caitlyn Burroway (5), senior
Rachel Siurek (4), redshirt-senior
Rebecca Abrahamson (1) and sophomore
Maddy Mallory (1). Junior
Maddie Uyemura capped things off with back-to-back aces to secure the 2-0 lead.Â
The third and final set proved to be the most competitive of the day. NMHU and Regis were neck-and-neck until the very end. With the set tied at 22-22, back-to-back kills from junior
Mara LeGrand and Burroway gave the Rangers enough separation to stay comfortable. However, the Cowgirls came back with a kill of their own to make it 23-24. But, the ensuing service would land out of bounds, ending the set as Regis took the 3-0 sweep.
Game Notes: RU had a .309 hitting percentage through the three sets compared to NMHU's .2. The squad racked up 42 kills and capitalized off seven aces. Regis out-dug the Cowgirls by a margin of 49-40 and registered four blocks. Burroway had a match-high 15 kills while LeGrand tallied a match-high 37 set-assists and 15 digs. Siurek was close behind Burroway with 10 kills of her own. Abrahamson came in clutch with three block-assists. With tonight's win, the team has officially clinched a spot in the annual Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament.Â
Up Next for the Rangers: The team will play their second to last match of the regular-season when they travel to Grand Junction to face the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (18-5,13-3 RMAC) Friday, Nov. 13.
