Solid Night For No. 17 RU Leads To Straight-Set Win Over South Dakota Mines

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The No. 17 ranked Regis University volleyball team (2-2, 2-1 RMAC) breezed past the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines (0-3, 0-2 RMAC) on Friday evening, needing only three sets to earn the win.

How It Happened: The visiting side hit their stride during this match as they won handily in the final two sets after fending off the Hardrockers in the opening set. Set one was the closest of the night with Regis winning by three points, 25-22. The Rangers hit .200 in the set with 14 kills, without scoring any points on blocks or with service aces. They forced seven attack errors from their opposition and only committed four themselves.

It was set two where the Rangers really got it going on both sides of the ball. They hit a season-high .481 for a set, committing only one error in 27 attempts. Just like the first set, RU scored 14 points off kills, but this time they added two blocks defensively. They held South Dakota Mines to a negative attack percentage in the second set which led to a huge 25-12, 13-point set-two victory.

Riding their hot streak from the second set, it was time to put the Hardrockers away in the third set. Another solid performance offensively sealed the deal for RU as they collected their first three-set sweep of the season.

Game Notes: Between the two teams, there was one service ace in the match, and 11 total service errors. Regis led the both categories with the only service ace, but added six service errors to the box score. For the fourth match in a row, senior Caitlyn Burroway led the team in kills, reaching double figures with 10 kills, giving her 49 kills on the year. Right behind her was junior Rachel Siurek who collected nine kills while hitting a tremendous .500 for the match, adding a block as well. Sophomore Ayala Plummer hit .417 through the three sets and chipped in with six kills and a solo block.

Three players recorded nine digs apiece in the match including Burroway, sophomore setter Mara LeGrand and reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Defensive Player of the Week, Haley Kennedy. LeGrand led both sides with 29 assists and had three kills plus a solo block.

Head coach, Joel List, on tonight's match: "The team did a great job tonight. They came into the game with great focused intent. The first set was a little sloppy, and we had a hard time scoring the way that we wanted, but South Dakota Mines did a great job getting the ball to their middles. We managed to clean up our offense and served tough. We learned a lot about our middles tonight, as we leaned on them quite a bit, but they handled it well and did a great job accepting the responsibility."

Up Next for the Rangers: No. 17 Regis will return home for a three-team pod next weekend as they welcome the Adams State Grizzlies and the Westminster College Griffins to the Regis Field House. Three games will be played on Sunday, February 21 with the Rangers competing in two of the three matches. RU will face the Griffins at 10 a.m. and will then host the Grizzlies at 4 p.m. later in the day. There will be a neutral site match between Westminster College and Adams State at 1 p.m.
