DENVER – With the series win already under its belt, the Regis University baseball team successfully secured its sweep over Washburn with a 15-2 win at Regis Baseball Field on Sunday.
Â
How It Happened: Deadlocked at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning, sophomore infielder
Matt Marlow hit a single through the left side to score senior catcher
Roger Riley and senior utility player
Thomas Alexander from second and first, respectively, while giving the Rangers a 3-1 lead, which was all Regis would need to clinch the win and the four-game sweep. Riley walked, and Alexander singled to left to send redshirt sophomore infielder
Colten Chase, who singled up the middle to open the inning, home to tie the game.
Â
While comfortably leading 10-2 to start the sixth, RU tacked on five more runs. Sophomore infielder
Austin Vaught knocked an RBI single to right to score Alexander from third and gave the Rangers an 11-2 advantage.
Â
Then, in back-to-back at-bats, senior outfielder
Kyle Koontz and junior utility player
Miguel Marquez were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. These outcomes sent Marlow and senior infielder
Brevin Owen across home plate in those respective at-bats with Owen's run taking Regis to a 13-2 lead.
Â
An RBI fielder's choice from Chase allowed Vaught to score for an RU lead of 14-2.
Â
Finally, Riley's RBI single up the middle moved Koontz home from third while pushing the contest to its final score.
Â
The Ichabods grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first when junior outfielder Parker Dunn connected an RBI double to right center, bringing home senior infielder Xavier De Leon, who singled to start the game, from third.
Â
Washburn earned its other run in the fifth when Dunn singled to left to score De Leon, who singled to right. This run lowered WU's deficit to 6-2.
Â
Game Notes: Owen went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, a game-high four RBI, and a walk. Alexander also had a 2-for-3 day with three runs scored, one RBI, and a share of the game-high two walks. Marquez ended the game with a 2-for-3 performance, including a triple, and three RBI. Marlow's 2-for-4 offensive outcome was in addition to two runs scored and two RBI. Owen and senior outfielder
Coby Zimmerman each had a home run, while Alexander and Chase each doubled. Freshman pitcher
Dylan De Leon (1-0) was credited with the win.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers improve to a 4-0 record overall and begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play with a four-game series at CSU Pueblo (2-1) at Rawlings Field on Friday, March 5 at 6 p.m.
