Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rangers succeed in rematch with CSU Pueblo

Three Rangers reach doublele-digits in scoring

PEUBLO, Colo. - The Regis University men's basketball team (5-9) faced off against the Colorado State Pueblo ThunderWolves (3-14) in a rematch. The two teams previously met just two short days ago, when the Rangers won 80-69.

Tonight, Regis' solid shooting elevated them once again, the final score was 79-74.

How it Happened: Quick shooting from the ThunderWolves put them ahead from the jump. But, senior guard Brian Dawson nailed the first field goal to put Regis on the scoreboard two minutes into the game. During a timeout a few moments later, freshman forward Nik Atanasovs got the nod to take the floor. The freshman made an immediate impact by scoring back-to-back layups to narrow CSU Pueblos' lead to just three.

RU took the lead with ten minutes left in the half. Graduate guard Troy Brady and Atanasovs combined their skills for a 13-4 run three minutes before the buzzer. The score was 45-33, Regis, at the end of the first 20 minutes.

In the second, the Rangers continued their efficient scoring, but a swift 24-10 run near the end of the game put CSU Pueblo behind by just two points. But, Dawson got to the freethrow line after drawing a foul with under a minute to play. He continued to split the pear, giving Regis a 77-74 lead. The ThunderWolves followed by attempting a 3-pointer with three seconds left to send the game to OT, but it missed. Brady snagged the rebound and was promptly fouled. That was enough for Regis to hold on for the victory.

Here's what head coach Brady Bergeson had to say about tonight, as well as the season finale versus Adam's State,

"We played really well for 35 minutes and had a hard time closing the game tonight. However we did a great job of getting on to the next play and not compounding mistakes,"

"Our kids are hungry to see Adam's State again. We felt like that one got away from us last time we played. They are a very talented team with many weapons. We will need to play our best game to get them at their place,"

Game Notes: Atanasovs has been producing for Regis the past two games. Tonight, he broke his career-high in points. He scored 15 and nabbed 4 rebounds. Dawson also scored 15 points.

Sophomore guard Will Cranston-Lown helped his team by tallying a game-high five assists. He also was effective in crashing the glass with four boards.

Brady led the team with 18 points. He broke his Regis career-high which was previously 17.

Redshirt Sophomore forward Kevin Ebiriekwe played very well tonight, he had 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Both of which are career-highs.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis' final game of the season is slated for tomorrow. The team will battle with the Adam's State Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m.. The last time the two met, RU fell 60-69.
