No. 24 Rangers Get Back to Winning Ways Against Mountain Lions

DENVER – The No. 24 ranked Regis University volleyball team (1-2, 1-1 RMAC) got back to their winning ways with a 3-1 win over the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (2-2, 2-1) on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened: In what was initially scheduled as a three-team pod, the only match that was played was the matchup between Regis and UCCS. The day began with the Mountain Lions winning the opening set 25-20 as the Rangers hit -.161 with 12 attacking errors and only seven kills. In set one, senior Caitlyn Burroway and junior Rachel Siurek each tallied two kills, leading RU offensively.

Set two was controlled by Regis as they improved to a .261 hitting percentage. Burroway and freshman Halle Theis combined for eight kills (four apiece), with hitting percentages of .800 and .667, respectively. Additionally, the Rangers had six blocks in the second set, with Burroway and sophomore Londyn Johnson each tallied two blocks. Siurek and sophomore middle blocker Ayala Plummer each added a block in the set as well. After three lead changes, RU ran away with the set 25-16 to tie the set score at one apiece.

The third set lived up to the hype with 10 tie scores and five lead changes as each team was looking to capture the momentum. As the set progressed, the score remained tied at 23 following an attack error from the home side. As UCCS served, sophomore Mara LeGrand found Burroway with a crisp pass that Burroway sent to the floor giving Regis a 24-23 lead and set point. On the next rally, LeGrand found Siurek this time who was able to score the set defining point, putting the Rangers ahead 2-1 in sets.

Riding their third set momentum, RU used a 6-2 run in the middle of the set to go in front 17-11 which forced a timeout from UCCS. Sophomore Anna Allsberry came out of the timeout and recorded an ace on her serve to give Regis a 18-11 advantage. The Rangers kept their cool and rode their way to a victory following a service error from the Mountain Lions at 24-18, which provided RU their first victory of the season.
