Rangers sweep Mountain Lions in doubleheader

DENVER - The Regis University softball team (11-3, 8-2 RMAC) faced the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (6-8, 5-5 RMAC) in a doubleheader, Thursday afternoon.

Game One | How it Happened: Graduate student Taylor Armitage started in the circle for the Rangers. She pitched very well and only allowed four hits through the six innings played.

It was a defensive battle for most of game one. The Rangers struck first in the bottom of the third, when graduate student Laura Scheffel got to home plate off a single from graduate student Jade Loe, making the score 1-0, Regis.

Then, in the fourth, RU opened up the scoring. With the bases loaded, junior Jessi Case walked, which in-turn sent Armitage home. Then, sophomore Shayelyn Allen reached home on an error by the pitcher. Next, another error allowed Case to score. So, at the end of the fourth, the score was 5-0, Rangers.

Armitage added another run in the bottom of the fifth when she slammed one over the fence for a solo homer, which gave Regis a 6-0 lead.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Loe hit a walk-off two RBI home run, which made the score 8-0. Since RU had an eight run advantage, the mercy rule was enacted and the game was over.

Game Notes: Armitage recorded her second shutout on the season; her record is now 5-0. While batting, she went 2-3 and had a homerun. Loe went 1-3, had two RBI's and a homer. She also had a stolen bag. Junior Madison Flores and Armitage led the team in assists, each had three.

Game Two | How it Happened: Sophomore Kara Rodeheaver started in the circle for the Rangers in game two. UCCS took an immediate 2-0 lead to start the game, but Regis responded well by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Armitage batted in Allen via a single. Case sent home Armitage and Sophomore Logan Taylor when she doubled to left center. Then, Case scored off a single from senior Kynra Nelson, making the score 4-2, Regis.

The Mountain Lions wouldn't go down quietly though, they got bats on ball and tied the game up at four in the top of the third. But, RU responded in the bottom of the fourth when Case reached home plate off an error, giving the Rangers the lead back.

Regis tacked one more run on in the fifth inning when a sacrifice fly to left field by freshman Victoria McMains allowed Allen to score. Then, in UCCS' last at-bat, freshman Megan Loveland came in the game to relieve Rodeheaver. She pitched well and only allowed one run before RU could get three outs to end the game. The final score was 6-5, Rangers.

Game Notes: Case went 3-4 at the plate, had a team-high two RBI's, and two runs. She also had a game-high three stolen bases and four assists. Allen went 2-3 and scored twice. Taylor also went 2-3 and had a run. She even had a team-high five putouts. Rodeheaver improved her record to 1-1 and Loveland was credited the first save of her career.
