DENVER - The Regis University Women's soccer team ( 2-0-1) took on the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (0-6) Sunday afternoon. Due to a snow covered Regis Match Pitch, the game was played just down the road at MSU Denver's Regency Athletic Complex. The Ranger's suffocating offense was too much for BHSU, as Regis came away with a 2-0 victory!
How it Happened: RU controlled possession time for most of the game, which helped them keep the pressure up on the Yellow Jackets. The Rangers rattled off nine shots before freshman
Jillian Skurcenski scored in the 36th minute to break the 0-0 tie. Skurcenski scored by running up the middle of the field and lofting the ball perfectly over the keeper's gloves, giving Regis a 1-0 advantage.
Then, just a few moments later in the 43nd minute, beautiful passing by RU's attackers allowed another goal to be scored by the Rangers. Senior
Sophia Brendle drilled the ball to the back of the net off assists from senior
Julia Masciarelli and junior
Hanna Wallgren, making the score 2-0.
In the second half, Regis' defense held tough and didn't allow a single shot by BHSU. RU had eight more shots in the final 45 minutes, but no goals were scored. The final score stayed at 2-0, Rangers.
Here's what head coach
Kelly Brown had to say about today's win, "It was great to get a match in today given the circumstances with the weekend. Black Hills was an organized team that made it difficult for us to play through, but we were able to find two nice goals from Brendle and Skurcenski. We were able to move some players around a bit and see a few different looks in our lineup, which is great for us heading into conference play. The staff is looking forward to watching the film and to continue to get better in preparation for UCCS next Sunday"
Game Notes: Regis held the edge in possession, 55-45 percent. The team also had 19 shots (11 on target) to the Yellow Jacket's six (four on target). Senior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs had light work for the second game in a row as she only recorded four saves. Sophomore
Allison Warta led the team in shots, she had three.
Up Next for the Rangers: RU's next contest will be a road game against the UC Colorado Springs Mountain Lions on Sunday, March 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and you can watch it by clicking
