PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team came from behind twice in its series closer with CSU Pueblo and ultimately prevailed with an explosive 12th inning as the Rangers completed their sweep of the ThunderWolves, 14-6, at Rawlings Field on Sunday.
"IÂ am very proud of the effort of our players this weekend," said Regis University Head Baseball Coach
Drew LaComb. "It was a collective effort, and the whole team was engaged this weekend. It was exciting to see our guys compete and handle some adversity as a group.
"We just have to keep going, keep getting better, and stick together. Very proud to see how many guys contributed this weekend."
Â
How It Happened: After three full innings in a row without a score and the game deadlocked at 6-6, Regis saved its best for last in the top of the 12th to overtake CSU Pueblo. With senior catcher
Roger Riley on first from a hit-by-pitch, sophomore infielder
Matt Marlow sent the ball to left center for an RBI double that allowed Riley to score the go-ahead run, 7-6, which would prove to be the eventual game-winner. It would be the first of eight runs RU would score to put the game away.
Â
This eight-run, 12th inning was capped after Marlow singled up the middle to score redshirt sophomore infielder
Colten Chase from third. Chase's run made the score, 14-6, a margin that was far too much for CSUP to overcome. Chase doubled to left center and was responsible for bringing home both senior outfielder
Ryan Tierney from third and junior utility player
Miguel Marquez from second.
Â
The Rangers took the lead first, 1-0, in the top of the opening frame when Marlow made contact with the ball for an RBI groundout to second, which scored Chase from third. Chase singled to shortstop to open the game.
Â
The ThunderWolves then took the lead in the second. Senior catcher Stone Romero knocked an RBI single to center to bring home senior outfielder Adrian Martinez, who had an inning-opening triple to right center, to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
Romero then scored the go-ahead run from third, 2-1, on sophomore first baseman Reggie Williams' RBI bunt single.
Â
Regis tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth. Marlow, who doubled down the left-field line to lead off the inning, scored from third on senior outfielder
Coby Zimmerman's RBI groundout to shortstop.
Â
CSU Pueblo retook the lead in the fifth, 3-2, when junior third baseman Ty Lewis doubled to right center and scored senior infielder Kodee Martin from first. Kodee Martin walked in the previous at-bat.
Â
RU took advantage of CSUP's pitching woes in the eighth by scoring four runs to take a three-run, 6-3 lead. Senior outfielder
Kyle Koontz and Marlow walked with the bases loaded in back-to-back at-bats to bring home sophomore infielder
Austin Vaught and Chase, respectively. Vaught led off with a single up the middle, and Chase bunted a single. Chase's run gave the Rangers a 4-3 lead.
Â
With the bases still loaded, Riley crossed home plate from third on a wild pitch, giving Regis a 5-3 advantage.
Â
Marlow later scored, 6-3, on senior catcher
JT Stanley's sacrifice fly to left.
Â
However, the ThunderWolves proceeded to knot the game up in the eighth's bottom half. Kodee Martin started things off with a solo home run to left. Romero later singled up the middle to score Lewis, who singled through the right side, from second. Junior infielder Aidan Welch, who walked to reach base, later scored from third on senior utility player Logan Gibbons' sacrifice-bunt fielder's choice to tie the game at 6-6. The score would remain there through the end of the ninth inning, which would send the game into extra innings.
Â
Game Notes: Marlow closed the series with a 3-for-5 performance, scoring three runs, hitting a game-high four RBI, and getting two walks. Riley had a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, crossing home plate twice and walking twice. Chase turned in a 3-for-6 result with the bat and scored three runs, had two RBI, and one walk. Sophomore pitcher
Zach Macosko (2-0) threw 3.2 scoreless innings in the victory, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out one. Sophomore pitcher
Porter Hardcastle lasted 6.0 innings in the no-decision in which he gave up three runs, six hits, and two walks while striking out five.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: RU moves to an 8-0 record overall, which is its best start in program history. Additionally, the Rangers have a 4-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Regis returns home to Regis Baseball Field to host a four-game series against Colorado Christian (3-4, 2-2 RMAC), beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
