Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers split four-game sereis with Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, New Mexico - The Regis University softball team (9-3, 6-2 RMAC) played the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls (4-4, 4-4 RMAC) in the final doubleheader a part of a four-game series. Yesterday's doubleheader was split between the two teams. Today, the squads were evenly matched yet again.

Game One | How it Happened: Graduate student Taylor Armitage started in the circle for the Rangers. She pitched very well and only allowed one hit through five innings.

Regis seemed to pick up where they left off yesterday and made a strong offensive presence. They scored six runs through the first four innings. The runs came from the likes of Armitage who scored on a passed ball, junior Jessi Case who raced home via a single to right field from freshman Katherine Raper, and freshman Victoria McMains who scored off a single from senior Kynra Nelson.

The runs kept coming for Regis and the score was 9-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. For a moment, it looked as if NMHU would finally get on the board. They had runners on second and third with just one out. But, RU's defense was strong as they caught a fly and foul ball to end the inning. No more runs were scored and the game ended 9-0, Rangers.

Game Notes: Armitage nearly had a no hitter, she allowed only three hits through the six innings played. She improved her record to 4-0. Case went 2-3 at the plate and had a pair of RBI's. In addition, she scored twice. Graduate student Jade Loe also went 2-3 and had two RBI's. Armitage improved her record to 4-0.

Game Two | How it Happened: Freshman Megan Loveland started in the circle in game two for the Rangers. Regis got on the board with two runs in the top of the second inning; a solo home run by Case and a RBI double by sophomore Shayelyn Allen made the score 2-0, RU.

But, things got chaotic in the bottom of the second for the Rangers. The Cowgirls were hitting everything that crossed home plate, they recorded 10 hits in the inning. Head coach Nicole Thompson sent two different pitchers in the game to attempt to stop the bleeding. Finally, senior Maisie Mortimer got Regis out of the inning, but not before NMHU scored 11 runs, making the score 11-2.

Sophomore Kara Rodeheaver got the call to pitch for the Rangers in the third, but NMHU scored two more in that inning. RU was able to shrink the Cowgirl's lead by scoring five runs through the third, fourth and fifth inning, making the score 13-7, NMHU. But, no more runs were scored in the game and that score was final.

Game Notes: Loe went 2-3 at the plate in game two and scored two runs. She also had two RBI's, plus a homer. Raper went 2-3 and had a RBI. Allen led the team in putouts with eight. Nelson scored twice and was 3-4 in the batter's box. She also had a RBI.

Up Next For The Rangers: The Rangers will have a six-day break before the team will return to the friendly confines of the Regis Softball Field. The team will face-off against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in a four-game series starting March 13.
