Rangers settle for a split with ThunderWolves in doubleheader

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (13-7, 10-6 RMAC) returned to competition Thursday versus the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves (13-13, 10-12 RMAC) in a doubleheader. Despite not playing for over two weeks, the team showed little rust as they split the doubleheader with Pueblo.

The Rangers took the first game, but the ThunderWolves' plethora of runs in game two gave them the edge.

Game One | How it Happened: With graduate student Taylor Armitage starting in the circle, Regis played strong defense throughout the game. Armitage's pitching came up big for Regis as she allowed just four hits and one run.

RU took the 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Armitage batted in graduate student Laura Scheffel off a base hit to right center.

In the third inning, a sac fly from graduate student Jade Loe allowed junior Jessi Case to race home. Then, freshman Katherine Raper sent a bomb over the left field fence for a solo homer and increased the team's lead to three.

In the fourth, Case wanted in on the fun and sent a ball over the left field fence, scoring junior Madison Flores and sophomore Shayelyn Allen for the three-run homer! Later in the inning, Loe sent home senior Kynra Nelson when she doubled to center field. At the end of the fourth, the score was 7-0, Regis.

Pueblo was able to get on the board after a big triple sent home a run in the bottom of the fifth. But, RU tacked on one more run when Case scored off a single from Raper.

The final score was 8-1, Rangers.

Game Notes: Case was 2-4 at the plate and picked up three RBI thanks to her homer. She also scored three times. Armitage went 2-3 and had a single RBI. She improved her pitching record to 7-1. Raper and Scheffel each went 2-4 in the batter's box and Raper had two RBI. Allen owned a game-high 13 putouts.

Game Two | How it Happened: With sophomore Kara Rodeheaver starting in the circle for game two, it looked like RU might've been able to get out of Pueblo with a sweep. But, a flurry of runs from the ThunderWolves didn't allow it.

The Rangers raced out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. After a big double from Loe, an error by the shortstop allowed Nelson and Case to score. Then, Scheffel sac flied and Loe was sent home. Next, a beautiful base hit up the middle from sophomore Jillian Bartley batted in Raper.

The ThunderWolves woke up when it was their turn to bat in the first and scored two. Then, in the third, they added on six runs to make the score 8-4, Pueblo, heading into the fourth.

A solo homer from Case as well as a sacrifice bunt from Bartley in the fourth kept the game close at 6-8. But the opponents put up four runs in the fifth. Later in the sixth, Loe scored off a single from Scheffel, but it was too little too late.

The final score from game two was 12-7, ThunderWolves.

Game Notes: Loe and Raper each went 3-4 at the plate while Loe had two RBI. Bartley was a perfect 2-2 and earned two RBI. She also led the team in putouts with six. Loe's home run total is now seven, which leads the team and is tied for third most in the RMAC.

Up Next For the Rangers: Regis will return home this weekend when the team takes on the No. 4 team in the RMAC, the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (19-13, 18-10 RMAC).

The team will be celebrating a group of four seniors as they recognize their vast accomplishments and dedication to the softball program before the first game of the four-game series. The first doubleheader will start at noon this Saturday.
