DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (13-9, 10-6 RMAC) traveled just down the road for a crosstown matchup against the MSU Denver Roadrunners (24-8, 22-6 RMAC). It was a beautiful sunny day for a doubleheader at the Regency Athletic Complex in downtown Denver.
Regis dropped both games in the doubleheader with a game one score of 8-3 and a game two score of 11-5.
Game One | How it Happened: Graduate student
Taylor Armitage started in the circle for Regis.
The Rangers struck first in the first inning when junior Jessi Case reached home plate on an error by the catcher.
The Roadrunners matched RU when it was their turn to bat and leveled the score at 1-1.
Scoring cooled off until the bottom of the fourth inning when MSU Denver got hot. The Roadrunners scored three runs before freshman Katherine Raper came in to relieve Armitage, but the freshman couldn't stop the bleeding either. Four more runs were plated, so freshman Megan Loveland came in to get Regis out of the inning and she did just that.
Through the half-inning, seven runs were scored and the Roadrunners increased their lead to 8-1.
RU wouldn't go away quietly though, the team scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The first run came when Raper grounded out, but Case was able to race home from third. Then, senior Kynra Nelson scored when graduate student Laura Scheffel singled through the left side.
That would be it for scoring from both sides and the game ended with a score of 8-3, MSU Denver.
Game Notes: RU had four hits compared to the Roadrunners 12. Case went 2-4 at the plate and scored two of Regis' runs. She also had four putouts and led the team in assists with five. Scheffel went 1-3 and had a RBI. Freshman
Ashlynn Balliet went 1-2 and one putout. Armitage was credited the loss, her record is now 7-2.
Game Two | How it Happened: Sophomore
Abby Covington got the nod to start in the circle for Regis in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Rangers had a short memory and got things going quickly. With Case planted on second, graduate student Jade Loe sent a bomb over the fence for a two RBI homer. Later in the inning, Balliet had a big double to right field, which allowed Scheffel to score and gave Regis the 3-0 lead.
The Roadrunners put up one run when it was their turn to bat in the first inning, but RU kept the runs coming in the second. Freshman Carryn Leto scored when Case singled up the middle, so the Rangers were able to keep their three run lead.
Things started to get away from Regis in the bottom of the third inning when MSU Denver sent home four runs to give them a 5-4 lead.
Later in the fourth, the Roadrunners kept getting bats on ball and plated five more runs, giving them a 10-4 advantage over RU.
MSU Denver added another run in the fifth inning, but Regis got out of the inning and avoided an early ending via mercy rule.
With time running out, RU got one more run on the board in the sixth inning when Case hit a nice double to right center and freshman Victoria McMains scored, making the score 11-5.
Regis had one more shot in the seventh to send home some more runs, but it wasn't happening and the 11-5 score would be final.
