Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers avoid being swept by Roadrunners with a narrow victory

DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (14-10, 11-7 RMAC) wrapped up their four-game series with the MSU Denver Roadrunners (25-9, X23-7 RMAC) Sunday at the Regency Athletic Complex in downtown Denver.

Yesterday, the Rangers fell in both games of the doubleheader. Today, the Rangers fought hard to split and avoid a Senior Day sweep. The Roadrunners took game one, while Regis squeezed out a narrow victory in game two.

Game One | How it Happened: Freshman Megan Loveland got the go ahead to start in the circle from head coach Nicole Thompson

MSU Denver picked up where they left off from yesterday and scored two quick runs in the first inning.

Regis had a great opportunity to plate some runs midway through the third inning with the bases loaded and one out. However, MSU Denver pitcher Darby McGhee struck out freshman Ashlynn Balliet to make it two outs. Then, graduate student Jade Loe got caught stealing home and the Ranger's at-bat was over.

Following that half-inning, the Roadrunners added another run via a homer over the center field fence. They followed with another run off an error by the catcher, so Thompson made a change and sent in freshman pitcher Katherine Raper to relieve Loveland.

Unfortunately, Raper would have to leave the game after only a few pitches due to an injury. So, Freshman Alexis Kemp came in to finish the inning, but not before one more run was scored, making the score 5-0, Roadrunners.

The game really got away from RU when MSU Denver sent home seven runs in the fourth, making the score 12-0. And that would do it as no more runs were scored by either team and the game ended early after a run-rule mercy at the end of the fifth.

Game Notes: Freshman Victoria McMains had the only hit of the game for the Rangers, it was a single to center field. MSU Denver had 14 hits. Junior Madison Flores and freshman Carryn Leto led the team in putouts, each had three. Balliet led the team in assists with two. Loveland's record is now 4-4.

Game Two | How it Happened: Graduate student Taylor Armitage started in the circle in game two for Regis.

Regis got on the board first in the top of the second inning when McMains batted in Balliet via a single to first base.

RU scored again in the third inning when sophomore Logan Taylor slammed a double down the left field line and sent home Balliet, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Since MSU Denver cut the Ranger's lead to just one in the sixth inning, a dramatic seventh inning was in store.

Regis couldn't add to their 2-1 lead in the top half of the seventh, so it was up to the defense to avoid a sweep.

The first out came from a popup to McMains at second. Then, Armiatge struck out the following batter. The Roadrunners were down to their last out when they sent in Kayla Banks to pinch hit. But, she flew out to junior left fielder Carly Gray and the game ended with a score of 2-1, RU!

Game Notes: Armitage faced 15 batters before allowing a hit, her record is now 8-2. Through the game, she only allowed two hits. Taylor was 1-2 at the plate and had a RBI. She also had a team-high in putouts with five. McMains was 2-3 in the batter's box and also had a RBI. Balliet led the team in assists with three.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will return to the friendly confines of the Regis Softball Field this Friday and Saturday for a four-game series against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (16-20, 16-16 RMAC). The team will be celebrating Senior Day prior to the start of game one on Friday.
