DENVER - The Regis University women's soccer team (4-1-1, 2-1-0 RMAC) headed to Spearfish, S.D. to face-off against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (0-11, 0-5 RMAC) in their final regular season game of the season.
The Rangers were able to outlast the Yellow Jackets after a flurry of goals from both teams in the second half. Regis held on to earn a 3-2 win over BHSU.
How it Happened: Through the first half, both defenses were playing strong as no goals were scored by either team. The Rangers were getting shots off though, the team rattled off five, but none found the back of the net.
In the first 45, Regis' defense held strong by only allowing four attempts by BHSU. Junior
Katelyn Martin got the start in goal and saved two solid cracks on goal from the Yellow Jackets.
In the second half, both teams came to life. Yellow Jacket Madison Kandler broke the 0-0 tie in the 49th minute and gave them a one goal lead. But, RU had a quick turnaround just a minute later when sophomore
Molly Kratzer sent a beauty past the keepers hands off assists from senior
Natasha Wehner and junior
Gia Lemley to level the score.
BHSU wasn't done just yet though, Ella Goodman scored early in the 58th minute to give the Yellow Jackets back the lead.
With the Ranger's backs against the wall, they needed something quick to tie the game up. Freshman
Isabella Woliver answered the call by scoring in the 68th minute off a great pass from RS
Emily Goodson. With the game tied at 2-2, things quickly got very intense in the final 15 minutes of play. Ella Goodman of BHSU was issued a yellow card with just 11 minutes left and the score still locked up.
But, Woliver came up again big in the clutch and rifled the ball into the net off an assist from senior
Hanna Wallgren to put Regis in front, 3-2.
With time running out, the Yellow Jackets got two more shots off, but neither was on-target and the game finished with a score of 3-2, RU.
Here's what head coach
Kelly Brown had to say about today's win, "At the end of the day, we are very thankful and appreciative to get these past two matches in. Our players have had to overcome a great deal of adversity off the field and today we had to overcome some adversity on the field for the result. This team doesn't give in easily; I have a ton of respect for this group of players,"
She continued, "Coming off a 12-day pause, the group came from behind twice to win two matches and earn not only a spot in their conference tournament, but also a No. 2 seed and an opportunity to host a postseason game. That's big time. That's a group our staff is proud to coach,"
She finished by saying, "It has been a complete team effort to qualify and will take a complete team effort to compete on Tuesday and hopefully, we are still playing at the end of the week. It has been a fun season and we want it to last as long as we can, but for now, we focus on recovery."
Game Notes: The Rangers outshot BHSU 14 (11) - 9 (5) in today's game. Martin recorded three saves and was a huge key in Regis' success. Kratzer had a game-high three shots, all of which were on-target.
