PUEBLO, Colo. – The No. 3 Rocky Division-seeded Regis University men's soccer team needed more than regulation to decide its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament Quarterfinal match against No. 2 Mountain Division-seeded CSU Pueblo, and in the end, prevailed with a double-overtime 1-0 victory at Art and Lorraine Gonzalez Stadium on Tuesday.
Â
"I must say that I am so proud of this group of young men," said Regis University Head Men's Soccer Coach
Tony McCall. "The resilience and character of this group is second to none. CSU Pueblo was a formidable opponent and did make us work for everything that we got today. We scored at a very opportune time, and it was a quality finish. We are pleased to move on to the RMAC Semifinals, and we look forward to playing Mesa once again on Friday."
Â
How It Happened: Late in the 108th minute of a scoreless draw, senior forward
Parker Klein received junior midfielder
Michael Jimenez's pass after a rebound deep in ThunderWolves territory. Klein then launched the ball into the bottom-right corner of the goalbox for the golden goal to seal the win for the Rangers.
Â
Regis had the game's first shot when junior defender
Sam Gardner attempted an on-target shot to the bottom center at the 4:05 mark.
Â
CSU Pueblo registered its first shot-on-goal in the 26th minute on senior forward Nazar Deputat's shot to the bottom left of the net.
Â
RU sustained and survived threats at the 59:58 and 60:08 marks. The former threat involved sophomore forward Vinzent Zingel's shot to the goalbox's bottom right, and the latter threat consisted of a shot by sophomore midfielder Matthew Coleman, which ended up being wide left of the goalbox.
Â
The Rangers withstood CSUP throughout regulation and experienced another threat in the first overtime when Zingel sent an on-target shot to the bottom center midway through the 100th minute, but it was saved just as all preceding on-frame shots had in the contest.
Â
Finally, in the second overtime, junior forward
Kristian Hooker's shot-on-goal to the bottom left of the goalbox with 107:26 reading on the clock set the stage for the aforementioned rebound by Jimenez and the game-winning goal by Klein.
Â
Game Notes: Klein (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) scored the game's only goal. Jimenez (1 A) was credited with the contest's only assist. Hooker, senior defender
Danilo Pekovic, and freshman midfielder
Mitch Gordon each attempted one shot that was on-frame. Gardner and senior midfielder
John Halter both recorded two shots with one of those shots being a shot-on-goal. Junior goalkeeper
Luca Falagrady (7 SV) had a career-high seven saves after playing the entire 107:48 of the game.
Â
The ThunderWolves outshot Regis by a 20-9 margin, which included a 7-6 shots-on-goal tally that was also in favor of CSU Pueblo.
Â
