DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (15-13, 12-12 RMAC) celebrated Senior Day by hosting the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (19-21, 19-17) in the Ranger's final home four-game series season.
The four seniors who were celebrated were:
Pitcher #12 Taylor Armitage
Left fielder #7 Jade Loe
Right fielder #8 Kynra Nelson
Center fielder #15 Laura Scheffel
RU fought hard to earn a doubleheader split. The opener's score was 11-1, Regis, while the closer's score was 4-1, Skyhawks.
Game One | How it Happened: Armitage started in the circle in game one for Regis.
The two teams had somewhat of a slow start through the first three innings. In the fourth though, each team would put up runs.
The Skyhawks took the 1-0 lead thanks to a Ranger error. However, Regis took it right to Fort Lewis with back-to-back homers when it was their turn to bat.
Scheffel made the most of her Senior Day by bombing one over the fence for a two RBI homer. Then, freshman Ashlynn Balliet wanted one for herself and sent a solo dinger over the left field fence, giving RU a 3-1 lead.
Later in the fifth, the Rangers extended their lead when Scheffel and Balliet each drew bases-loaded walks. Then, sophomore Logan Taylor sac flied, which allowed junior Jessi Case to score, making the score 6-1.
Regis kept bats on ball in the sixth inning when Loe singled up the middle, which let Case race home.
Then, Scheffel kept her Senior Day magic alive with a walk-off grand slam to end the game early in dramatic fashion via mercy rule.
Game Notes: Scheffel's seven RBI is a career-high and brings her season total to 25. She was also a perfect 3-3 in the box, with her hits being two homers and a double. Balliet was 1-3, but her sole hit was a bomb over the fence. Case was 1-3 and had four putouts, as well as three assists. Taylor was 1-2 and had a game-high six putouts. Nelson was 1-2 and scored twice. Armitage's record is now 8-11.
Game Two | How it Happened: Sophomore
Abby Covington started in the circle for the doubleheader closer.
The closer began the same way the opener did, not a lot of offense through the first three innings.
However, Fort Lewis struck first with a solo homer in the top of the fourth. They then added two more runs off a single to right field, giving them a 3-0.
RU finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Case batted in junior Madison Flores off a single, cutting the Skyhawks lead to 3-1.
Since the Skyhawks put one more run up in the seventh, the Rangers needed three runs to extend the game. However, Fort Lewis retired all three outs and the game ended.
Game Notes: Case was a stellar 3-3 in the batter's box while also recording a RBI, three putouts and two assists. Flores was 2-3 and earned three putouts. Scheffel was 1-3 and had three putouts as well. Covington's record is now 0-3.
