GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The No. 5 seeded Regis University softball team (20-17, 16-14 RMAC) had a phenomenal day in the 2021 RMAC Softball Tournament yesterday that was capped off with victories against the No. 2 seeded MSU Denver Roadrunners (29-11, 27-7 RMAC), as well as the No. 6 seeded Fort Lewis Skyhawks (20-22, 19-17 RMAC).
Today, the Rangers faced their biggest challenge yet in the No. 1 seeded Colorado Mesa Mavericks (36-3, 34-2 RMAC). The winner would advance to the tournament championship game(s).
But, an exceptional performance from Colorado Mesa pitcher and RMAC Pitcher of the Year Paige Adair was simply too much for Regis to handle.
How It Happened: Graduate student
Taylor Armitage (13-5) started in the circle for Regis.
Mesa scored their first runs in the opening inning off a two RBI homer from the RMAC Player of the Year, Ellie Smith.
Later in the second, the Mavericks plated more runs on a two RBI single, increasing their lead to 4-0.
Then, a RBI single from Mesa in the fifth inning made head coach
Nicole Thompson send in sophomore
Abby Covington to pitch for Armitage.
Covington did a good job of getting RU out of the inning, but a Regis error in the bottom of the sixth allowed Mesa to score again, making their lead 6-0.
Finally, Thompson sent in freshman
Megan Loveland to try to get some outs. However, a two RBI double put the Mavs ahead by eight, enacting the run rule and ending the game early.
Game Notes: Junior
Jessi Case and freshman
Victoria McMains were the only two Rangers to register hits today, both were singles.
Graduate student
Jade Loe and freshman
Carryn Leto led the team in putouts with three each.
Case led the team in assists with two.
Up Next For the Rangers: The Rangers will head home, but they'll keep their chins up as they should be proud of their impressive run in the tournament. The future is bright for the Regis Softball program! Stay tuned to
