RMAC Tournament run ends for Regis in 16-4 loss to top-seeded No. 1 Colorado Mesa

Rangers claim early lead but get outscored in latter innings by the Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Just 18 hours removed from the start of its previous game, the No. 4 seed Regis University baseball team went into its second game in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament with very little rest and experienced a tough 16-4 defeat from top-seeded No. 1 Colorado Mesa at Suplizio Field on Thursday to eliminate the Rangers.

"Adam Hubley competed on the mound for us and gave us a chance early on," said Regis University Head Baseball Coach Drew LaComb. "We just weren't able to get some things going offensively, which happens, and I will give credit to Ryan Day for CMU and how he pitched. CMU did a good job getting some big two-out RBI, and we needed to find ways to close out some innings. Again, this game was a good learning lesson for our guys, and I believe we will use this game as a reference point as well for next year's team.

"All in all, I am proud of the way our guys handled adversity this year and competed. They moved our program forward in the right direction, and I am looking forward to bigger and better things for this program next year."

How It Happened: Looking to expand upon the Mavericks' 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, junior outfielder Matthew Turner doubled through the left side to score junior infielder Caleb Farmer from second base to extend Colorado Mesa's advantage to 5-1. CMU did not require any additional runs as this proved to be the eventual game-winning run.

The Mavericks closed out their four-run inning in the next at-bat on sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary's two-RBI double down the right-field line, scoring junior outfielder Johnny Carr from third and Turner from second for a 7-1 lead. Carr bunted his way to first on a fielder's choice.

Regis lowered its deficit by a run, 10-2, in the seventh when senior catcher JT Stanley connected on a solo home run to left.

However, Colorado Mesa put together a five-run eighth inning that started on junior infielder Jordan Stubbings' three-run home run down the left-field line that allowed Turner to score from third and McGeary to score from first for a 14-2 lead. Turner singled to center, and McGeary singled up the middle in consecutive at-bats.

CMU junior catcher Spencer Bramwell, who hit an RBI single to center, capped off the Mavericks' scoring for the game in the eighth when he reached home on Carr's single to left. Bramwell's run gave Colorado Mesa a 16-2 advantage.

RU was not done though and had its strongest inning offensively in the ninth. Stanley knocked his second solo home run to left to trim the Rangers' deficit to a score of 16-3. This was followed three batters later by junior utility player Miguel Marquez's solo home run to left to take Regis to a 12-run deficit of 16-4, where it remained for the rest of the contest.

The Rangers possessed an early 1-0 lead in the first on account of senior outfielder Coby Zimmerman's RBI single to third, which allowed senior outfielder Kyle Koontz to score. Koontz, who was on third, walked to get on base.

Unfortunately, this lead was quickly erased on Stubbings' two-run home run to left in the bottom half of the opening frame, scoring McGeary from first, to give CMU a go-ahead, 2-1 lead. McGeary reached first on a fielder's choice in the previous at-bat.

Ahead 3-1 in the fourth, the Mavericks commenced their four-run inning with Farmer's RBI single through the left side that allowed junior infielder Chase Hamilton, who led off the inning with a single to left, to score from third and brought Colorado Mesa to a 4-1 advantage.

Game Notes: Stanley finished the game with a 2-for-4 performance, consisting of the two home runs that yielded two runs scored and two RBI. Marquez posted a 2-for-3 showing, including the home run, which gave him a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore infielder Matt Marlow contributed a 2-for-4 outcome at the plate. Koontz claimed a 1-for-2 effort with the bat, scored one run, and had a game-high three walks. Zimmerman recorded a 1-for-4 day, one RBI, and a stolen base.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis drops to a 21-19 record overall with the loss. RU will have to wait to see if it will be playing in the NCAA Division II Championship in the days to come.
