CHADRON, Neb. - The Regis University softball team (18-14, 15-13 RMAC) had a short turnaround from Wednesday's doubleheader against CSU - Pueblo. The team is wrapping up their regular season tour with one final stop in Nebraska to take on the Chadron State State Eagles (12-26, 12-22 RMAC).
The opener went Regis' way with a score of 10-6. The closer required extra innings, but RU got it done with a score of 9-5.
How It Happened | Game One: Armitage got the nod to start in the circle in game one for the Rangers.
Graduate student Laura Scheffel, who was coming off an impressive 3-3 performance plus a homer against the ThunderWolves, picked up right where she left off earlier in the week. With freshman Katherine Raper on first, Scheffel sent a two RBI dinger over the fence to give the Rangers an immediate lead.
Later in the lineup with freshman Ashlynn Balliet planted on third, an Eagle error allowed her to reach home plate for another run, making the score 3-0.
Chadron would plate two runs when it was their turn to bat, but graduate student Jade Loe took it upon herself to match one of their runs with a solo RBI homer in the second inning.
Then, Balliet kept it going with a RBI single as she batted in Raper, increasing their lead to 5-2.
The Eagles added one run in the third, but scoring slowed until the sixth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Loe added to Regis' score with another solo RBI home run. Then, freshman Carryn Leto scored as a pinch runner when Scheffel singled, making the score 7-3, RU.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chadron would threaten the Ranger's lead by scoring three runs off three hits. With still one out remaining, head coach Nicole Thompson sent in freshman Megan Loveland to pitch for Armitage. The following batter would groundout, ending the inning.
The score was 7-6, Regis, as the teams headed into an action-packed seventh inning.
With Regis batting first, sophomore Logan Taylor had a nice single up the middle to put a runner on. Then, junior Jessi Case hit an absolute bomb over the fence, scoring herself and Taylor. Loe followed that with another solo four-bagger, making RU's lead 10-6.
Loveland and her defense did a fantastic job of retiring all three outs without allowing a run and solidifying the Ranger's victory.
Game Notes: Case was 2-5 in the batter's box with a pair of homeruns.
Loe was 2-5, and she sent both of her hits out of the park.
Scheffel was a perfect 3-3 and had three RBI.
Armitage was 2-4 offensively at the plate. With the win, her record on the mound moves to 11-3.
Taylor was 2-4, leading the team defensively with seven putouts.
Loveland was credited her second save of the season.
The five home runs from Regis matches their season-high from earlier this season when they recorded five home runs in a win over Adams State on Feb. 28.
How It Happened | Game Two: Sophomore
Abby Covington started in the circle for game two.
A slow start from Regis in the closer allowed CSC to get two runs in the first inning. They followed that by plating another in the fourth, giving them a 4-0 lead heading into the fifth.
RU needed runs and quickly; junior Carly Beard was there to deliver. With senior Kynra Nelson and Raper on second and third, Beard smashed a three RBI home run over the fence, matching Chadron's three runs and tying the game.
Freshman Megan Loveland came in to pitch for Covington in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles took the lead back by scoring one run, but the Rangers matched it in the top of the sixth when an error allowed Junior Maggie Washer to score, unearned.
In the top of the seventh inning, Regis took a 5-4 lead when freshman Victoria McMains grounded out, but Leto was able to race home from her position on third.
With RU clinging to their one run lead, coach Thompson wanted Armitage to enter the game and finish off the Eagles. However, the home team had other plans.
Chardon got one run home and tied the game up at five off a big double. But, they were unable to take the lead, so extra innings were needed to declare a winner.
Neither team would score in the eighth.
With Raper leading off in the top of the ninth, the freshman got a rally going with a solo homer. Then, Leto followed that performance with a huge triple to right center. Taylor was up next in the order and batted in Leto with a single to left.
The Rangers were not done yet though, an error allowed Taylor to race home. Regis would plate one more run when junior Madison Flores grounded out, but Balliet had enough time to run to home plate and increase RU's lead to 9-5.
Armitage put all three outs away soundly in the bottom of the ninth, ending the game.
Game Notes: Taylor was 3-4 in the box and led the team in putouts with eight.
Beard was 1-1 with a three-run home run.
