Rangers Win 2021 RMAC Tournament Championship

Regis beats Colorado Mesa 15-6 on Sunday

DENVER – The Regis University women's lacrosse team are the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament Champions. Regis (14-1) defeated the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (9-5) by a score of 15-6 on Sunday, giving the Rangers their second-consecutive RMAC Tournament Championship title, and their fourth overall since 2014.

How It Happened: Regis opened the game on a 4-0 run as four different RU players scored goals. Senior Kyleigh Peoples drew first blood, junior Maya Quigley scored on a free-position attempt, junior Alexis Parker netted a goal and senior Andrea Macalalad scored, all leading to a 4-0 lead for the home team.

CMU responded with back-to-back goals to cut into the Regis lead, but that was met with another 4-0 run from the Rangers as Peoples, senior Jessica Berg (2) and freshman Lily Ferguson all put their shots in the back of the net. The offensive spurt helped RU boost their advantage to six goals, 8-2. Before the half ended, the Mavericks cut the lead down to 9-4 as the teams headed into the halftime break.

After the break, Peoples came out and scored the first goal for the home team less than five minutes in. CMU managed to score two-straight goals bringing the score to 10-6 in favor of Regis. After the Mavericks scored their sixth goal, the Rangers closed out the game on a 5-0 run as the defense held CMU scoreless for the final 22:14, and the offense continued to shine. Senior Elle Crawford came up big down the stretch in some critical moments, stifling the Mavericks offense as they fought to get back into the game.

The game ended with RU ahead 15-6 as the team stormed the field in celebration of their 2021 RMAC Tournament Championship.

Game Notes: The RMAC Tournament MVP, Kyleigh Peoples, flashed her brilliance again as she went for four goals, two assists, three caused turnovers and one ground ball. Junior Bailey Truex tallied three points with two goals and one assist. Five different players recorded two points in the game (Macalalad, Berg, Parker, Johnson, and Ferguson).

On the defensive end, Berg and senior Sarah Kate Dhom led all players with four caused turnovers while Crawford had six ground balls for Regis. Crawford's (W, 14-1) remarkable performance between the pipes led to a season-high 10 saves for the senior. Quigley scooped up five ground balls and caused three turnovers and netted a goal. Berg and sophomore Gabby Rothermund each had three draw controls with freshman Tia Krats grabbing two draw wins as well.
