DENVER – The winning continues for the Regis University men's soccer team (3-0) as they win their third-straight match, besting the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (1-2-1) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened: This match was full of excitement from both sides Five yellow cards were assessed throughout the match and Regis spent 47:13 playing man-down after they were assessed a red card in the first half.
Prior to the extracurriculars, the Rangers drew first blood as the offense worked the ball into the offensive end. Senior
Michael Jimenez received a pass deep in Skyhawks territory, he threaded a great ball through the defense into space for graduate student
Parker Klein to have a crack at a shot. Klein beat the keeper with his shot to give RU a 1-0 lead in the 26
th minute.
As mentioned before, Regis was given a red card in the final minutes of the first half, and for the remainder of the game the Rangers played with only ten men on the field. Despite playing down a man, RU continued to thrive as the defense held the visitors to only two shots in the first half.
10 minutes into the second half, Regis started a counterattack that sent
Ethan Willson forward behind the defense. Willson struck the ball which deflected off a defender and trickled towards the goal where fellow senior
Kristian Hooker collected the ball and netted his second goal of the season, extending the Rangers lead to two goals in the 57
th minute.
The Skyhawks were finally able to break through the relentless RU defense to score a goal in the 75
th minute, but after that the Regis back line locked down their defensive effort and foiled any attempts at a chance for the visitors to tie the score. The clock ran out and the Rangers had claimed their third win to start the season.
Game Notes: Klein and Hooker were the goal scorers and Jimenez picked up the only assist for RU. Senior
Tim Dolan made an outstanding save on a header attempt from the Skyhawks in the 53
rd minute which proved to be a crucial to the final score. Both teams finished with seven shots and three shots on goal in the match. The margin tilted in favor of FLC 7-2, but the Regis defense continuously cleared the ball away from any danger.
