Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Regis returns to winning ways vs Hawaii Pacific

DENVER - The Regis University women's soccer team (3-2) returned to action Sunday afternoon against the Hawaii Pacific Sharks (1-4). The Rangers were coming off a pair of losses to Texas Woman's University and Midwestern State the week prior. Today though, Regis returned to their winning ways and were just too much for the Sharks to handle.

How it Happened: A slow start from RU made it look like this would be a closer game than anticipated. Brittny Ihara of Hawaii Pacific broke past Regis' defensive line in the 10th minute of play and opened up the scoring, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

However, adjustments were made on the fly from the Regis sideline and the team composed themselves before things got out of hand. Junior Allison Warta was able to find a beautiful pass from junior Kelby Kuo in the 26th minute and scored to level the game. The goal was Warta's first of the season.

Only a few moments later in the 30th minute of play, junior Madison Hand lifted Regis above the Sharks off assists from Hand and Warta, making the score 2-1, RU. The Rangers kept up the pace in the final minutes of the first half and earned yet another goal. This time, junior Kelby Kuo raced past Hawaii Pacific defenders to score an unassisted goal. The score was 3-1 heading into halftime.

In the final 45 minutes of the game, Regis put on the brakes and turned their attention to defense. The backs took it upon themselves to get stop after stop - they allowed just two shots in the second. No other goals would be scored by either team and 3-1 would be the final score.

Game Notes: The Rangers outshot the Sharks by a margin of 19 (7) - 5 (4). Regis had three corners while Hawaii Pacific had one. Junior Audrey Teague had a game-high five shots while Kuo had three in addition to her goal. Senior Gia Lemley and freshman Stella Straubing each had a pair of shots as well. Senior keeper Katelyn Martin had three saves. Two cautions were issued to Hawaii Pacific players, one in the 30th minute and one in the 63rd.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Ranger's conference schedule will officially begin this Friday when they take on the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls (0-2) at the Regis Match Pitch. The game will start at 3 p.m. and tickets are available for purchase by clicking here.
