Regis Wins Ninth-Straight Set in Three-Set Victory over Fort Lewis

DENVER – For the third match in a row, the Regis University volleyball team swept their opponents in three sets for a win. This time, Regis (8-4, 3-1 RMAC) defeated the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (1-7, 1-3 RMAC) 27-25, 25-12 and 25-11 for their third-consecutive win.

How It Happened: The Rangers were pushed by the Skyhawks in the opening set, but they finally got over the hump with a 27-25 win. The teams traded leads throughout the set, with FLC leading by as many as four points on a few occasions. RU would not back down despite a number of obstacles in set one. They battled back to tie the score at 20 points, but three-straight points went to the Skyhawks to put them ahead 23-20 late in the set. That is when Regis locked it down and stormed into the lead, 24-23, with a 4-0 run of their own. Tied at 25, a kill from senior Rachel Siurek and a service ace from graduate student Sophie Griese put the set away for the Rangers.

In set two, RU put together a much better offensive game with a hitting percentage of .345 after hitting only .163 in the first set. Regis also held their opponents to a hitting percentage of .000 with two blocks. FLC had seven attacking errors in the second set and the Rangers only had four with 14 kills. The second and third sets were not nearly as competitive as the opening set, but that should be attributed to RU finally settling in and finding their rhythm. Regis won set two 25-12 and in set three their match-best .382 helped them to their biggest win the match, 25-11, in the final set.

Game Notes: The Rangers have won their last nine sets in a row with wins over the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs, Western Colorado University and Fort Lewis College. This afternoon, Siurek was the match leader with 10 kills and an impressive .563 hitting percentage. She also had four total blocks in the match and tallied three assists on top of that. Graduate student Caitlyn Burroway had nine kills and posted a .316 hitting percentage with two service aces and six digs. Junior Mara LeGrand followed up her stellar performance last night with another solid game. She had 35 assists (11.67 assists per set) in three sets of work and she chipped in with five digs and three kills. Junior Haley Kennedy also put up some great numbers. She had 16 digs (5.33 digs per set) in this match which led all players. She added three assists on a few out of system opportunities. RU finished with a .283 hitting percentage in the match. Five players registered five or more kills in the match including freshman Taylor McCarthy who had five kills in two sets of work with a starry .455 hitting percentage.
