PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (4-1-1) traveled south to take on the ThunderWolves of Colorado State University Pueblo (7-1) on Sunday afternoon. The non-conference matchup had all the intensity of a conference game as the two teams ended up tied after 90 minutes and had to settle up in overtime. The ThunderWolves escaped with a 1-0 win on their home turf with a goal in the 105
th minute.
How it Happened: Regis and CSU Pueblo both had good opportunities throughout the first 90 minutes of play. The ThunderWolves outshot the Rangers 11-6 in regulation, but RU's goalkeeper
Tim Dolan saved all four shots that were on target. In the 61
st minute, Regis'
Jake Brown was issued a red card after receiving a yellow card earlier in the match.
With no goals scored through 90 minutes, the game moved into the first overtime period in which the home team took three shots, all of which were saved by Dolan. Neither team was able to breakthrough with a goal in the first 10-minute overtime period, so they headed to the second and final OT.
The ThunderWolves once again took three shots, and on the final of the three, Dolan was unable to make the save and CSU Pueblo walked away with the 1-0 win with a golden goal in the second overtime period.
Game Notes: Despite playing with only 10 men for over 40 minutes in the second half and overtime, the Rangers challenged a very good ThunderWolves team, nearly outlasting them to earn a tie. In total, Dolan had seven saves through 104:36 as the goalkeeper. Graduate student
Parker Klein and junior
Vilhjalmur Kaldal were credited with the only two shots on goal for RU in the game.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's soccer team will host their conference opener this Wednesday against their cross-town rivals, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners, at 3 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch.
