Rangers clinch third straight six-point weekend with rollercoaster win over Colorado Mesa

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team showed its resiliency on Sunday, overcoming an early deficit and a late penalty kick to grind out a 3-2, rollercoaster victory against Colorado Mesa University.

With the win, the Rangers (7-4-1 overall, 6-0 RMAC) extended their winning streak to six games, and three straight six-point weekends to begin conference play, while Colorado Mesa dropped to 4-6-1 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC.

"To go down early, then lose the lead again late, but still be able to come back and win that game says a lot about the character of our players and willfulness to do what is necessary," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Mesa had the early momentum Sunday, cashing in a goal from 30-yards out to take a 1-0 lead at the 16:07 mark of the first half.

The Rangers handled the adversity and responded right back with the equalizer just four minutes later when senior forward Audrey Teague finished off a lead pass threaded up the middle by senior midfielder Madison Hand.

Just 50 seconds later, after gaining possession off the ensuing kickoff, the Rangers surged ahead to take a 2-1 lead as Teague found sophomore Sarah Wynn wide along the right side and Wynn sent a cross into the box, headed home by freshman forward Natalie Bunch for her second goal of 2022.

"It was very important for us to answer and it was a gritty goal from Audrey. It was important for us to get the equalizer before that feeling of nervousness sets in and before the other team gets the feeling of composure and confidence," Frykholm said. "And then to go up 2-1 just a few minutes later on a beautiful goal by Natalie was a real turning point in the game."

Regis maintained its 2-1 lead at the break, but would have to overcome one more setback in the second half.

At the 49:21 mark, Colorado Mesa was awarded a penalty kick opportunity and capitalized to briefly tie the score again at 2-2.

As they did in the first half, though, the Rangers wasted little time responding as they scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 51:58 of the second half, courtesy of a goal from senior forward Kelby Kuo off a feed from midfielder Ella Palmer.

"It was a beautiful ball from Ella with Kelby making a run from behind the back line, which is something we've trained a lot on, so it was good to see something we've practiced pay off in the game," Frykholm said. "It was not an easy finish for Kelby. Ella put the ball where it had to go and Kelby did a great job getting her left foot on it to sneak it in."

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 15-13 edge in total shots, including 8-4 in shots on goal.
  • Colorado Mesa won the corner kick battle, 7-5.
  • Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Martin picked up the win and stopped two of the four shots on goal she faced.
UP NEXT: Following a three-game home stand, the Rangers now head back out on the road for matchups against Colorado State University Pueblo (4:30 p.m. Friday) and nearby rival Colorado Christian University (1 p.m. Sunday).

Midway through the RMAC portion of the schedule, the Rangers currently sit alone atop the conference standings. And while the chance to compete for a RMAC regular season title is firmly in front of them, Frykholm said the team knows they were need to be prepared day in and day out moving forward these final three weeks.

"It obviously feels great to be where we're at right now. It's the reward for a lot of hard work and there has been a lot of learning happening as we find different ways to win," Frykholm said. "But the flip side of all that is, when you sit atop the standings, you get everyone's best shot. We know the rest of the way that we're going to face a lot of pressure, intensity and urgency. We'll try to train with that intensity and be prepared for that the rest of the way."
