Rangers fall by 2-0 final on the road to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team hit its first snag of the conference season on Friday, falling by a 2-0 final on the road against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Thursday's loss snapped a 10-game point streak and undefeated run through RMAC play for the conference leading Rangers (10-5-2 overall, 9-1-1 RMAC) dating back to Sept. 16.

For UCCS (10-2-4 overall, 6-1-3 RMAC), the win keeps them alive in the three-team race, along with Regis and No. 10 Colorado School of Mines, to win the RMAC regular season title.

At the end of play Thursday, the Rangers (28 points) still hold a two-point lead over the Orediggers (26 points), and a five-point lead over UCCS (23 points), in the conference standings with one week remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The two teams played toe-to-toe through the opening 30 minutes before the Mountain Lions were able to net the game's first goal at the 33:01 mark.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they were unable to recapture momentum as UCCS would go on to out-shoot Regis, 16-6, in the second half and add an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to seal the 2-0 final.

Regis finished the evening with 11 total shots, three on goal, led by the senior forward tandem of Kelby Kuo and Audrey Teague with three shot attempts apiece. Kuo, sophomore forward Stella Straubing and senior defenseman Ella Palmer accounted for the three Regis shots on goal.

Graduate student goalkeeper Katelyn Martin, the RMAC leader in saves so far this season, stopped three of the five shots on goal she faced.

UP NEXT: The Rangers still control their own destiny heading into their final game of the regular season; a road clash next Wednesday evening against No. 10 ranked Colorado School of Mines.

A win would guarantee Regis its first RMAC regular season championship since 2017, while a tie could still puts the Rangers in a position to win the conference title depending on results for UCCS and CSM, as well as potential tiebreaker scenarios.

Kickoff between the Rangers and Orediggers is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
