Rangers fall just shy of RMAC regular season title with 2-0 road loss to No. 9 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — Hunting its first RMAC regular season title since 2017, the Regis University women's soccer team played toe-to-toe with No. 9 ranked Colorado School of Mines for much of the evening Wednesday; the final night of the 2022 RMAC regular season.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, a tough 10-minute stretch in the first half would prove to be the difference as the nationally ranked Orediggers struck twice en route to capturing a 2-0 win and the RMAC regular season crown.

"It was a great evening of soccer and our team started off so well those first 20 minutes, playing some really attractive soccer. And then we had about 10-minute stretch where we lost some focus, couldn't get out of our end, and bang-bang it's 2-0," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "The game obviously changes at that point because (CSM) just needed a tie and it's pretty easy to defend a 2-0 lead when you don't have to press forward. That said, our team continued to play hard in the second half. I'm proud of the way they played. There were moments where we played really well tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis (10-5-2 overall, 9-2-1 RMAC) was the team that came out firing Wednesday, registering the game's first two shots through the game's opening five minutes.

Colorado School of Mines (13-1-3 overall, 10-0-2 RMAC) was able to weather the early storm, though, and began to flip the field on the Rangers near the 20th minute. The sustained pressure for the Orediggers paid off as they took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on a goal by Reese McDermott, followed quickly by a score from Paola Rubi just three minutes later at the 33:32 mark.

"We started getting away from the things that were working for us. We started hitting some longer balls, hopeful balls, and Mines just kept coming back at us," Frykholm said. "They put a little more pressure on us, we gave the ball away about 4-5 possessions in a row, and they had some real dangerous flip throws. We were on our heels and they just kept putting the ball into the box. With that much sustained pressure, for that many minutes against a good team, you're going to give up a goal. And then the aftermath and shock of going down 1-0 left the door open for the second one."

The Rangers tried to mount a rally, finishing with six shots in the second half and putting four of those shots on frame, but were unable to net a score against CSM goalkeeper Sadie Wolf.

Senior forward Kelby Kuo, senior defenseman Ella Palmer and junior midfielder Jillian Skurcenski led all Rangers with two shots and one shot on goal apiece.

In net, graduate student goalkeeper Katelyn Martin stopped five of the seven shots she faced.

"Coming off the UCCS loss last week, I think we were a litten shaken because we got outplayed pretty badly. But with tonight's game, I think it kind of rekindled some energy and belief that we do have the technical quality to play at this level," Frykholm said. "There's some good enthusiasm about lies ahead for us as we get ready for the postseason."

UP NEXT: Regis heads into the RMAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, following a 1-0 win for No. 2 seed UCCS over CSU Pueblo on Wednesday. The Rangers, who advanced to the RMAC title game a season ago, will aim to start this year's postseason march on Sunday when they host No. 6 seed Colorado Mesa University in the quarterfinals.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields; a venue where the Rangers are 7-2-1 overall this season and a spotless 6-0 during regular season play.

"Our team has earned the right to have a home playoff game and I'm proud of them for that. We just need to have a quick turnaround, maintain the energy and attention to detail that allowed us to put ourselves in this position," Frykholm said. "We've played very well at home and there is that added element of wanting to protect our home field. It's going to be a special day for us and I think the girls will rise to the challenge of not just the playoff game, but embracing the opportunity we have in front of us."
