Balanced attack lifts No. 18 Rangers to 3-1 win over Colorado Christian

DENVER, Colo. — Facing a familiar crosstown foe, the No. 18 ranked Regis University volleyball team was able to shake off a tough serving night Friday to knock off the visiting Colorado Christian University Cougars in four sets: 25-21, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-16.

With the victory, the Rangers (16-5 overall, 12-1 RMAC) remain just a half-game back of No. 2 ranked Metropolitan State University of Denver for the top spot in the RMAC standings with five matches remaining; including Saturday's 3 p.m. showdown against the Roadrunners inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

"We saw Colorado Christian during the preseason in a scrimmage and they definitely are a lot better. We were trying to disrupt them with our serve, and missed a bunch of them in doing so with 13 service errors, but CCU responded by passing and serving well themselves," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "Getting toward the end of the season, every match is big and any time we can get tested like this makes us better. It was great to see the girls be resilient and coming back after we lost that third set and playing really clean in the fourth set."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis opened the evening with a 25-21 win in the first set and a 25-20 win in Set Two, tallying 14 kills in each set and hitting a sizzling .367 and .357, respectively.

The Rangers would finish the evening with a .279 attack percentage as a team and had six different players finish with seven or more kills, led by sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis with 13.

Senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink followed with nine kills, while sophomore outside hitters Hannah Kepler and Emma Prentice each added eight kills apiece to pace the Regis pin hitters. Senior outside hitter Halle Theis followed close behind with seven kills.

The eight kills were a career-high for Prentice, who took on an expanded role Friday as graduate student Klaudia Sowizral worked her way back from a two-match absence.

"Emma has just continued to get better, at a rate I hadn't even expected, and has been doing a great job on the right side for us," List said. "Then we were able to bring Klaudia in that fourth set to change some things with our block and she did a great job, so it's just a testament to the depth on our team."

Defensively, the Rangers were as stingy as they were efficient as they limited the visiting Cougars to just 17 kills and 12 attack errors through the opening two sets while limiting CCU to a pedestrian .137 attack percentage for the evening.

Senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy paced the Rangers' back row with 18 digs, while fellow defensive specialists Bre Skala and Kylie Stremmel followed with eight digs and seven digs, respectively.

Senior setter Mara LeGrand showed off her wide range of abilities Friday, contributing seven kills, seven digs and four block assists while racking up 46 assists (11.5 assists per set).

After dropping a tightly contested third set, 25-21, the Rangers were able to right the ship and secure the victory with a 25-16 win in Set Four; sparked by an 8-1 run that turned a 9-8 deficit into a 15-10 lead midway through the set.

GAME NOTES:
  • The two teams finished tied with 11 total blocks.
  • Five of the Rangers' 11 blocks came in the clinching fourth set.
  • Regis finished with a 6-5 edge in service aces.
UP NEXT: The Rangers conclude the weekend with another big-time rivalry match as they welcome in No. 2 ranked MSU Denver on Saturday, with heavy playoff implications for both teams as they jockey for the top spot in the RMAC standings.

First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Regis Fieldhouse.
