Senior leaders come up clutch in Rangers' 2-0 road win over Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Staring at a potential tie, the Regis University women's soccer team netted two goals in less than 60 seconds — both coming in the 89th minute — to steal a 2-0 road win over Colorado Christian University on Sunday.

With the win, the Rangers (8-4-2 overall, 7-0-1 RMAC) remained unbeaten during RMAC play and capped a four-point weekend, while the loss dropped the Cougars to 3-10 overall and 2-6 in the RMAC.

"What a good lesson that every single minute out of the 90 minutes means as much as any other. Thankfully, the team just continued to push and was relentless in the second half against a really physical and technical CCU back line," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "It's a testament to our team for having the discipline to fight when it would have been easy to sort of let down and walk away with a tie."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers had two seniors step up in the clutch Sunday as forward Kelby Kuo broke the scoreless tie at the 8:14 mark, finishing off a lead pass from fellow senior Audrey Teague for her fourth goal of the season.

Teague wasn't done as, following the ensuing kickoff, she found the back of the net herself, scoring just 25 seconds later at the 88:39 mark for the all-important insurance goal.
"Having been in positions like that in the past, and sensing a moment that comes with experience, both of them were mentally on the same page and sensed a moment and delivered," Frykholm said. "They were two great finishes."

For Teague, the goal was her team-leading sixth score of the fall — all six coming during RMAC play — while her 3-point day also padded her team lead with 14 points this season. Her 14 points are tied for the third most amongst all RMAC players.

In net, senior goalkeeper Katelyn Martin notched her second shutout of the weekend after stopping all seven shots she faced. The shutout was Martin's fifth of the season; tied for the second most in the RMAC.

"Katelyn was phenomenal. Talking with the team afterwards, we mentioned that she made one huge save in the first half and two big saves in the second half that really kept us in it," Frykholm said. "In the last two weeks, she has been as focused and as sharp as she's ever been during her career at Regis. She's in great form right now and we sure needed her to be today."

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with an 18-10 shots advantage, including 11-7 in shots on goal.
  • Sophomore forward Stella Straubing led all Rangers with three shots on goal.
  • The Rangers finished with a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
  • Each team registered seven fouls on Sunday.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will now turn their attention toward their final home stand of the regular season, with matchups against Western Colorado (4 p.m. Friday) and a Senior Day showdown against Fort Lewis College (11 a.m. Sunday).

With just four matches remaining in the regular season, and the Rangers holding a 2-point lead over Colorado School of Mines in the RMAC standings, each game will be crucial as Regis hunts a RMAC regular season title.

"It's going to be a special weekend for a bunch of seniors and I think there is going to be great energy, not only because we're honoring a really special group, but because of what is also on the line," Frykholm said. "We have a chance to control our destiny in the RMAC and these two games this weekend are as big as any we've played so far. It's a big weekend for us."
