Kuo nets two goals, Rangers roll to 3-0 victory over Western Colorado to open final home stand

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team continued to flex its muscle on Friday, rolling to a 3-0 home victory against Western Colorado University to remain unbeaten inside Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action.

Regis (9-4-2 overall, 8-0-1 RMAC) dominated play from the opening whistle, finishing with an 18-8 advantage in shots over the visiting Mountaineers (5-8-1 overall, 3-5 RMAC)

"I'm really proud of the way the team played, especially in the second half in regards to seeing us perform things we implemented during the week in practice. It's really gratifying to see that and any win in this league you're grateful for," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "Our second half was probably one of our more complete halves all year."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard in the first half. Just as the clock crossed the 17-minute mark, senior forward Kelby Kuo was able to outmuscle a Mountaineer defender for a lead pass by junior Sophia Leone and calmly buried her shot in the back of the net to put the Rangers up 1-0.

Regis would enjoy that 1-0 lead at the break before adding two more scores in the second half, the first coming again courtesy of Kuo as she stepped to the penalty kick stripe at the 75:54 mark and netted her second score of the evening.

With the two goals, Kuo is now tied for the team lead with fellow senior Audrey Teague at six goals apiece.

Freshman forward Natalie Bunch, who drew the foul in the box to set up Kuo's free kick, then notched a goal of her own with just 13 seconds.

Bunch was able to spring free behind the Mountaineers back line and lace a bullet into the back of the net off a lead pass from Teague.

"At times, we've struggled advancing the ball into the attacking third so what I was really happy to see was that both those goals came from us being deep into (WCU's) end of the field," Frykholm said. "We were able to put the ball into dangerous positions and it feels like, from an attacking perspective, we're starting to crescendo. And I'm thankful our defense has played has been so solid long enough to allow us to put the attacking pieces together."

That Rangers' defense continued to shine Friday, limiting Western Colorado to just two shots on goal and one corner kick for the evening despite the fact the team was without the services of starters Madison Hand and Madison Cullinan.

Sophomore defenseman Samantha Murray earned her third straight start, while players like Leone, Cadence Fisher, Jaden Nelson and Allison Warta absorbed more minutes in their absence.

"It's two sides of a coin. On one hand, you hate being a little banged up, but on the other hand it does give an opportunity for some other players to step up, develop confidence and intuition for the game that you just can't simulate in training," Frykholm said. "We had a number of players play some really important minutes for a back line that continues to be just a little bit different each week due to injuries. I'm really pleased that, even despite all these changes, we've continued to be really stingy defensively."

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to close out their final regular season home stand in style Sunday when they host Fort Lewis College on Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Regis Turf Fields.

"Senior Day is a special day and we're looking forward to honoring this class and their families. But we know we still have a game to play against a really good opponent," Frykholm said. "We've talked about it all week about trying to not ride that emotional wave of the day. The theme of the week has been, 'Head and heart.' I really feel the team and the players are steady right now. We know where we are, the opportunity in front of us, and the importance of putting forth our best effort."
