No. 3 seed Rangers top No. 7 South Dakota Mines to advance to Friday's RMAC semi-final

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 14 ranked Regis University volleyball team took the first step in what it hopes is a long postseason march on Thursday, defeating No. 7 seed South Dakota Mines (25-00, 25-27, 25-22 and 25-00) in the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinals, hosted inside the Auraria Event Center on the MSU Denver campus.

With the win, the No. 2 seeded Rangers advance to Friday night's semi-final around against No. 3 Colorado Mesa University, which earned a 3-0 win over No. 6 Colorado Christian in its quarterfinal matchup.

"It's tournament time, so emotions have to be under control and we know players and teams can play at their bests. I thought South Dakota Mines did a great job and posed a lot of problems for us," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "It took some time for us to adjust to that. But the good thing is we did adjust and came out with a win. I was proud of what we did."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis (21-6 overall) opened the Thursday matinee with a 25-20 win in the first set before hitting a snag in Set Two, falling by a 27-25 score in extra points that evened the match at 1-1.

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis, who led all Rangers with 16 kills Thursday on a .351 hitting percentage, helped get Regis back on track in the third set as she accounted for four of the Rangers' first six points and had 10 of her 16 kills over the final two match-clinching sets.

"We struggled to get our middles going early, so to see a pin hitter (Theis) go off was good for us. I thought Mara did a great job of utilizing Halle, she was very effective hitting down the line, and we continued to go back to that," List said.

Regis would go on to win another tightly contested third set, 25-22, before salting the match away with a 25-17 win in Set Four where the Rangers limited South Dakota Mines to a match-low .059 hitting percentage.

Sophomore middle blocker Amelia Davis and graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral joined Theis in double-figures with 14 kills and 11 kills, respectively, while sophomore Hannah Kepler (nine kills) and senior Nadine Burbrink (seven kills) rounded out a balanced Regis attack.

Senior setter Mara LeGrand, named a First Team All-RMAC selection alongside Davis earlier on Thursday, notched her 12th double-double of the season with 51 assists and a team-high 20 digs while also leading all Rangers with four service aces.

Fellow senior Haley Kennedy followed with 19 digs and three service aces, while the Rangers as a team produced 10 aces and 11 service errors as the team continued to apply pressure from the service line.

"We've got to be aggressive with our serve in every match from here on out," List said. "We knew going in that South Dakota Mines is a good serve receive team, so we had to serve tough and we did. Ten aces in four sets is really good and makes your job easier on defense if you can get them out of system."

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 10-1 advantage in service aces
  • Regis posted 63 kills on a .218 hitting percentage for the match compared to the Hardrockers' 47 kills on .192
  • With her 16 kills Thursday, Theis now sits at an even 300 kills in 27 matches played this season (3.06 kills per set)
  • LeGrand's 51 assists were the most she has had in a four-set match this season
UP NEXT: The Rangers will turn the page and get ready for a RMAC Tournament semi-final matchup against No. 3 seed and No. 17 ranked Colorado Mesa University. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Friday inside the Auraria Event Center on the MSU Denver campus.

Regis and Colorado Mesa faced each other less than a week ago in the RMAC regular season finale, with the Rangers rallying for a five-set victory over the Mavericks last Saturday inside the Regis Field House.

"It shows your competitiveness, your heart and your desire," List said of the quick tournament turnaround. "We're going to be tired, (Mesa) is going to be tired. We played Mesa last week, so we know what we're getting into there. We know every match from here on out gets harder so we'll make sure we bring our A-game tomorrow."
