SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The Regis University women's basketball team earned its first win of the 2022-2023 season in dramatic fashion on Saturday, closing the game on a 9-0 blitz over the final 2:44 to earn a 64-60 win over St. Edward's University.
How It Happened: The Rangers (1-1 overall) started the game hot, going on a 10-5 run in the first period and building a 15-11 lead while shooting 50 (7-14) percent from the floor and limiting the Hilltoppers (0-2 overall) to only 27 percent (4-15).
The Rangers would lead by as much as seven in points in the second period and own a slim 32-31 lead at the half. Regis outscored the Hilltoppers, 17-13, in the third quarter to take a 49-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
St. Edward's would not go away quietly, though, as it started the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run to retake the lead at 56-51 with 5:25 remaining. The Hilltoppers maintained that five-point lead with 2:44 left in the fourth period, but the Hilltoppers were unable to keep Regis at bay.
Graduate student forward Erin Stroberg got the run started with a pair of free throws at the 1:54 mark. Senior forward Sam Deem added two free throws of her own at 1:31 before junior guard Erin Fry scored the next four points, giving the Rangers the lead for good at 61-60 on a jumper with 52 seconds remaining.
Senior guard Josey Ryan led all Rangers with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting, while she was joined in double-figures with Madison Diercks (13 points), Deem (13 points) and Fry (11 points).
