Erin Fry records historical triple-double in win against UTPB, 73-63

DENVER, Colo. – Playing on their home court for the first time in the 2022-2023 season, the Regis University women's basketball team erased a 15-point deficit in the second quarter to beat the University of Texas at Permian Basin, 73-63.

The Rangers (2-1 overall) utilized a gigantic 30-point fourth quarter, and a historical triple-double from junior Erin Fry, to overcome a feisty Falcons (2-1 overall) squad.

According to the department's available single-game statistics, Fry's triple-double is the first for the program since at least 2003. Fry finished with 15 points, and set career-highs with 14 rebounds, and 12 assists in the win.

"When you've got a point guard that's getting defensive rebounds, that's going to make your offense go. I saw that she got a ton of rebounds, especially defensive, she had 12 defensive rebounds," said women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "She was incredible, just her toughness. To get 14 boards, 15 points, 12 assists, five steals, and only three turnovers in 39 minutes? That's a baller right there. I gave her the box score, which I've never done with a player, because I don't really believe in all the stats stuff, but she gets that one."

How It Happened: The Rangers were quiet offensively in the first half, starting the game down 8-0 and trailing by as much as 15 at the 9:05 mark of the second quarter.

Texas Permian Basin would take a 35-26 lead into the half after taking advantage of 16 Regis turnovers. The Falcons held an 18-4 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half, utilizing a trapping zone defense that put a lot of pressure on Regis' ballhandlers.

"We didn't take care of the basketball (in the first half) and we knew that was going to be a key. [UTPB is] an excellent team, especially defensively," said Marrin. "What we try to do in the preseason against regional opponents is go get something we wouldn't see in the RMAC. A 1-3-1 is a pretty unique defense. It rattled us quite a bit so that was not good, but we did learn to settle down a bit in the second half so I felt like that was a huge growth point between the two halves."

The message was received at halftime as the Rangers committed just seven second-half turnovers.

Regis trimmed the deficit to six at 49-43 at the end of the third quarter and started the fourth with a 12-3 run to tie the game at 55-55, pulling even on 3-pointer from Fry at the 4:38 mark.

The Rangers would take their first lead of the game with 1:56 remaining following a 3-pointer from senior guard Josey Ryan, who scored 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter on Tuesday. Ryan finished 4-10 from three-point range and was second on the team behind Fry with five assists.

Senior guard Sam Deem tied Ryan for the team-high with 16 points on the night while Athena Saragoza added 13 points off the bench to round out the four Rangers in double-figures.

"We just started occupying the areas of the court that we needed to better. So, offensively, we were more of a threat. We were just kind of out there in the first half," said Marrin. "We occupied both the high and low post better, which I didn't think we utilized at all in the first half. I thought that was a good adjustment by our girls to make. We were just more confident shooting it so when we got those looks we were able to get it off and mix up our inside-outside game."

Game Notes:
  • In addition to their offensive output, Fry and Ryan combined for nine of the Rangers' ten steals defensively
  • Morgan L. Smith grabbed six rebounds in just 11 minutes off the bench
  • Regis finished with a 16-8 advantage in fast break points
  • The Rangers' 13 made 3-pointers were their most in a single game since Feb. 26, 2022 in a win against Adams State (92-74)
Up Next: The Rangers play at home again against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Friday, Nov. 18. Tip-off is at 5:00 PM at the Rangers Field House.
